Techniques that are most useful for Troubleshooting Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANs) and Trunking Problems

VLANs are a grouping of ports that employ switches with logic inside to ensure that traffic from a group of ports is not send to other group of ports. On the other hand, trunking is a mechanism that allows multiple virtual area networks (VLANs) to function independently across several switches (Cisco, 2017). The most common VLANs include incorrect internet protocol (IP) addresses and missing VLANs, while the most common trunking problems are native VLAN mismatch, trunk mode mismatch and allowed VLANs on trunks.

Every VLAN should correspond to a unique IP subnet (Cisco Academy, 2017). When two devices in the same VLAN have different IP subnet, they cannot communicate. This is a common problem with the VLANs and can be solved through correct configuration and changing the subnet address to the correct one. Sometimes no connection is established even with correct IP addresses. This may signal missing VLANs. In such a case, the show vlancommand can be used to check whether the port belongs to an expected VLAN. If a port is found to be assigned to wrong VLAN, the command switchport access vlan can be used to assign the correct VLAN.             The common trunk problems include links incorrectly behaving as trunk

Information Management: The Processes of Troubleshooting Network Connection

The Processes of Troubleshooting Network Connection

Whether networks are wireless or wired, sometimes some issues can arise that makes it hard to use the network (Besnard & Bastien-Toniazzo, 1999). Network troubleshooting aims to resolve problems and restore the normal network operations within a network. The following processes describe troubleshooting of network connection. The first step would be to check the condition of the physical connection, and this involves checking the cable connectivity. Sometimes, a network connection is lost because the cable connection is loose or has been removed. Moreover, the cable should be checked for any cuts and that they click upon their insertion into the network port. This should include checking if the right type of cable was used for the network connectivity.

Secondly, the data link layer is checked especially the Address Resolution Protocol. The data link layer is where local communications occur through network port hardware addresses. A determination should be done to find out if IP addresses of the system are listed in the Address Resolution Protocol. If there are no addresses, then the Media Access Network is configured to match the distant port. Moreover, the network layer should be checked to determine if each system has an IP addresses, default gateway and network mask. This should determine if each node has unique IP address, if the gateway is correct and that the network mask (which handles traffic) is correct. If this is not the case, appropriate configuration is carried out. Finally, the CyberGuard firewalls in the transport layer and the client servers in the application layers are checked if they work properly.…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
