Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Feminism and/or Feminist. These could be stereotypes or phrases that first pop into your head, definitions or values that associate with feminism, positive or negative.

2) WATCH THE CHIMAMANDA NGOZI ADICHIE VIDEO-WE SHOULD ALL BE FEMINISTS. LINK BELOW

AFTER watching the Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie video – We Should All Be Feminists answer the following questions:

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is an award-winning Nigerian novelist. She is the author of AmericanahPurple HibiscusHalf of a Yellow Sun, and a collection of short stories entitled The Thing around Your Neck. She has been a fellow at Princeton and Harvard and a recipient of the MacArthur Foundation Genius Grant, among other fellowships and prizes. She currently divides her time between the United States and Nigeria, where she teaches writing workshops. I encourage you to explore her website to learn more about her work: http://www.l3.ulg.ac.be/adichie/ (Links to an external site.)

1. There is one word that Adichie says she hates more than any other word in the English language. What is it, and why does she hate it?

2. Adichie says that we are taught to view ‘women as inherently guilty.’ What does she mean by this?

3. Toward the end of the talk, Adichie addresses men directly. What does she say to men? What would you say to men, about men’s role in addressing ‘sexist oppression’ (as bell hooks put it)?

4. What is ‘bottom power’? Why does Adichie say that this is not really power?

5. What is Adichie’s definition of feminism? How is her definition similar or different from those presented in the textbook? Which definition resonates the most with you and why?

3) READ THE ARTICLE A DAY WITHOUT FEMINISM. IT IS ATTACHED IN ASSIGNMENT POST.

After reading the article A Day Without Feminism answer the following questions:

1. What year do the authors imagine? What kind of a world are they imagining? What changes have occurred since then?

2. How would your life be different if you inhabited this world?

3. Are there any issues that were discussed in this article that still need attention today? Which ones and how might they be remedied?
