Nobody by Dr. Marc Lamont Hill, State violence

Read Nobody by Dr. Marc Lamont Hill in its entirety. He will also join us for a guest lecture at the end of the semester. In Nobody, Dr. Hill uses “high-profile and controversial cases of State violence” to demonstrate that such cases are “a symptom of a deeper American problem,” and that at the root of each case “is a more fundamental set of economic conditions, political arrangements, and power relations that transform everyday citizens into casualties of an increasingly intense war on the vulnerable” (p.xxii). For your final paper you will similarly start with an incident related to racial justice that has taken place in the city of Newark (consider the topics covered in Golash-Boza’s Race and Racism) and tell your own tale of “Nobody in Newark.” Like Hill, you are going to perform a structural analysis of the incident such that you are investigating the “public policies, institutional practices, cultural representations, and other norms [which] work in various, often reinforcing, ways to perpetuate racial group inequity” (Aspen Institute). You will use the incident you have selected as the jumping off point for your structural analysis that weaves together the various relevant factors that engendered this incident. You are telling a story and making an argument that is supported by data and outside research. Your introduction should describe the issue. The body paragraphs continue the discussion with supporting evidence and your conclusion will provide a discussion of the possibilities for change resulting from activism surrounding the issue. Before submitting your final paper you will submit a brief (one page or less) proposal. The goal of this assignment is to help you clarify your ideas and to make sure you are on the right track in advance of you submitting the Nobody by Dr. Marc Lamont Hill final. The proposal should include: A description of the incident that will serve as the jumping off point for your final paper. A brief description of the various institutions involved in the incident and how they interact with one another. Your strategy of investigation: What kind of evidence are you going to try to gather? Try and be specific here, even if your ideas are hypothetical at this stage. Since you are going to do text-based research, say something about where you think you can find what you will need, what kind of sources you expect to examine. What are the first two things you think you should read? Why? If you have already done some reading, discuss briefly how your ideas fit in with what you have read so far.
