Nonverbal Communication
Many of our communications entail nonverbal communication, where information is relied without the use of words. Nonverbal communication is a process of sending as well as receiving wordless cues between individuals (Poyatos, 2014). People respond to cues like behaviors and postures, gestures, eye gaze, tone of voice and facial expressions on a daily basis. Using nonverbal communications like handshakes and hairstyles, they reveal who we are.
Examples of Nonverbal Communication
Haptics
Haptics is the study of touch, it is important for our physical and mental health. Sense of touch is used to share relational meanings and feelings. Handshakes, kisses, hug and playful roughhousing shows a relational meaning and are a means of showing relational closeness.
Physical Appearance
How we look, the way we dress, our hair and other objects, provide a way in which we communicate with others. Individual choices express our feelings to others on what one values and the image we wish to relay to others.
Artifacts
Artifacts refers to all the elements an individual adds to the body, such as watches, tattoos, earrings, sunglasses and makeup among others. In addition, the details of volume of space, spatial organization, size and arrangement of objects, color, lighting, temperature and noise, fall under artifacts.
Environmental Factors
The environmental factors that constitute a form of nonverbal communication include our home, office space, automobile and the rooms we spent time. How we keep our rooms affect how others perceive them, thus it communicates certain information. Most classrooms are painted dull in order to contain the concentration of students. In contrast, the restaurants are painted with bright colors in order to upbeat environment.
Proxemics
According to (Ker-Dinçer, n.d), proxemics is the study of human perceptions and use of structure and utilizes their personal and social space. Based on how it is used, space can be categorized into public, intimate, social and personal. Just like any other animal, human beings exhibit a nit for personal territory, which they do not want to be invaded.
Chronemics
Chronemics is the study of the perception and use of time (Kudesia & Elfenbein, 2013). Time management is a common phenomenon in communication and this varies from one culture to another. Some cultures have strong time punctuality while others do not mind keeping time. In the cultures where punctuality is kept, keeping somebody waiting is taken as an insult. The four basic considerations in time orientations are present, past, future and timeline. These orientations affect urgency of communication, structure and content.
Paralanguage
This is the study of the vocal effects as used in communication process. The common examples of paralanguages include tempo, pitch, stress, tone, volume, hesitations and inotation contours.
Silence
Silence is a form of nonverbal communication that can be used to rely by number of meanings. When individuals are communication, silence from one person may mean a refusal to engage in conversation or it can be used to regulate the conversation.
Personal Situation that Involved Nonverbal Communication I accompanied my friends for a walk in the park during one of my weekends. I was dressed in a pair of trouser, a t-shirt, shoes and a pair of sunglasses. In the park, there were several people, old and young. We strolled as we talked and most of my concentration was on the beauty of the park, so I kept my silence during the conversations as I enjoyed the beauty.
