My Nursing Portfolio

Summary of educational and professional goals

Past experiences with ill family and friends led me to choose nursing as my career. This included looking out for a younger brother who suffers from autism as well as a friend who suffers from asthma. This instilled in me a caring and nurturing personality as well as ability to cope with stressful situations. Based on this background, there are a number of educational and professional goals that I wish to achieve in the next ten years.

One of my main goals is lifelong learning in the field of nursing. The nursing program I am pursuing equips me with a variety of knowledge and skills that have stimulated me to pursue further competencies in the nursing field. In the light of this, I would like to acquire more nursing skills, knowledge and experience both in classroom and practicing situations. This includes pursuing master and doctorate degrees in nursing as well as various post-graduate certificate programs. It also involves initiating and participating in various evidence-based practices (EBP) programs at the workplace to contribute to research in various areas of nursing. I will join relevant nursing organizations and attend nursing conferences and workshops so as to stay current. These learning initiatives will ensure that I am more competent and effective as a practicing nurse by making me understand the rationale and methods in my work. It will also enable me to effectively pass on the acquired knowledge, skills and experiences to other nurses, including nursing students.

Another goal is to become a successful nurse by developing the necessary characteristics. This will ensure that I have a fulfilling and satisfying career by positively impacting on the patients and people I interact with. This includes being emotionally stable, compassionate and empatheticin a mostly stressful profession that has many traumatic situations that involve suffering and death. In so doing, I will be more effective in my roles as a caregiver and a comforter for the afflicted. Developing the characteristics also involves enhancing my communication and team skills so as to liaise more effectively between the doctor and the patient, anticipate situations as well as interact and bond effectively in a nosocomial environment and in class. This would involve respect for people and rules; being impartial, confidential and mindful of cultures and traditions whilst putting the patient first at all times.

Anticipated and unanticipated situations call for problem-solving skills, quick response and calmness on the part of the nurse, qualities that I aim at enhancing. Physical endurance and flexibility are also important characteristic that will enable me cope with rigorous schedules and activities as well as fit my personal activities around my career since nursing involves working long hours, nightshifts and working weekends.  Attention to detail is a quality that will make me avoid mistakes and near misses that have far-reaching consequences in the health sector.

My goal is to attain, develop and conform to the above characteristics so as to make me an effective nurse throughout my career.

Another goal is to provide healthcare community service especially to the less fortunate in society. This will be my way of giving back to the community. This could involve traveling to developing countries where there are many people who cannot afford nursing services. It would also involve volunteering my services in places where there are disease epidemics and disasters. I will achieve this by joining disaster response organizations such as America Red Cross and also registering with various nursing and disaster registries. Serving the less fortunate will ensure that I provide care and comfort to the poor and deprived, help me enhance my aptitudes and self-esteem as well as make me interact with people from different places and backgrounds.

With these goals of continuous learning, attainment of important nursing characteristics and volunteering, I aim to develop into a holistic human being who contributes to healthcare provision and making the world a better place for all.

Philosophy of Nursing

I will pursue lifelong learning to become the best nurse I can be. As the finest of Fine Arts that deals with a living body, unlike painting, sculptor or even architecture that deal with non-living things, nursing is a fine calling and a privilege that I will embrace with my whole being.

This is by practicing my core values and beliefs as well as developing the requisite characteristics that include kindness, honesty, endurance, teamwork, impartiality, confidentialityand success. The values and characteristics will guide my caring and comforting of patients and my service to the well-being of humanity.

Through lifelong learning and…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. Philosophy of Nursing

Importance of Nursing Theory
name

Institutional Affiliation

The nursing theory that I chose for this assignment is the deliberative process nursing process theory. I chose this theory because it addresses the fundamental nursing concept of nurse patient relationship. How a nurse relates and communicates to his or her patient largely defines how effective they are in delivering patient centered care.  Available evidence suggests that such patient centered care is critical in promoting recovery and well being of the patient (Tk & Chandran, 2017). Therefore, this theory provides a framework under which nurses can improve their relationship and collaboration with their patients and consequently provide care that is patient centered.

The deliberative nursing process theory is based on the argument that patients have their personal meaning they assign to events, feelings and situations. Therefore, it is important for the nurse to validate their own assumptions, inferences as well as conclusions with their patients. In this theory, Ida Jean Orlando suggests the interrelationship between the nurses and their patients. The action of either of them has an impact on the other (Tk & Chandran, 2017). This theory involves five interactional concepts namely professional nursing functions, presenting behavior, reaction, process discipline for nursing and continuous improvement. The organizing principle within this framework is the professional nursing function. Presenting behavior refers to the actual problematic situation that the patient is facing (Tk & Chandran, 2017). Immediate reaction refers to the actual internal response. Nursing process discipline relates to the procedure of investigating the needs of the patients.  Improvement is resolving patient’s situation. This theory further outlines the deliberate nursing process as a five stage process. The stages include assessment, patient diagnosis, care planning, implementation of nursing plan and an evaluation of the success of the plan (Estupinan, Lord, Crumblish & Risher, 2018).

There are four major interrelated concepts that are central to nursing theories and which collectively make up the nursing metaparadigm. These include person, health, environment and nursing (Lee & Fawcett, 2012). The deliberative nursing process theory addresses itself to each of these concepts. To begin with, the concept of person refers to the individual, their family or community who are primary recipients of nursing care (Lee & Fawcett, 2012). The theory of deliberative nursing concept of person through outlining the process of assessment to determine the care needs of the individual patient. Environment refers to the surrounds of a patient including their physical surroundings as well as the people around them. This theory addresses itself to the concept of environment equally through the assessment of the impact of the patient’s environment on her presenting behavior and overall healing process (Tk & Chandran, 2017). The theory further addresses the concept of health through the diagnosis step as well as the implementation of the care plant that addresses the patient’s situation and presenting behavior while improving their health. Lastly, this theory addresses the concept of nursing through its emphasis on the process discipline for nurses.

This nursing theory is useful to the nursing process for several reasons. First, it outlines a framework for collaboration between the nurse and the patient (Estupinan, Lord, Crumblish & Risher, 2018). This enables the nurse to offer patient centered care. Secondly, it outlines an effective process through which nurses can offer care to the patients. The five stage process is instrumental in offering effective nursing care that is tailored to the needs of each patient. This theory further finds application in MSN particularly within the healthcare policy specialty. The theory will inform the formulation of policies that encourage patient participation in health care delivery. Healthcare policy makers

Qualitative Research Design for the Study of Impact of Hourly Rounding by Nursing Staff on Patient Falls

Name of Student

University Affiliation

The Study Purpose

The purpose of the study is to determine whether use hourly rounding among the nursing staff in the inpatient medical surgical units can lead to reduction in patient falls. The study will employ a retrospective qualitative study design, where existing patient medical records will be examined to determine how hourly rounds influences the patient falls. In doing so, the study will provide research findings and draw conclusions on how hourly rounds influences patients falls and determine whether its use is associated with the reduction in inpatient falls in surgical units.

The Analytical Methods and Processes

The study will use the hospital available medical data that involved patients who experienced falls and those who did not fall during their hospital stay. The data will be drawn from a 2-year period involving participants aged 18 years or older. In order to ensure the study achieves external and internal validity, a systematic random sampling technique will be used and the number of participants (n) that will be used in the study will also be determined. Since the study will involve the patients who experienced falls and non-fallers, the study will employ the statistical data analysis methods. One of the methods that will be used for analysis is the independent sample t-tests. According to (Main & Ogaz, 2016) t-tests statistical analysis is employed in determining whether there is significant difference in mean of two groups. The method will be appropriate since study will evaluate the mean number of falls and compare them with the mean of the non-fallers to determine whether there is a significant difference. The other data analysis method that will be used is the variance. The rationale for using the va………………………inpatient medical surgical units……………………………………………………………………………

Past Present and Future Trends of Master’s Education in Nursing

The main focus of the article is that there was need to revise master’s education in nursing in order to give the students the needed expertise in the changing healthcare environment. Reflection on Nursing Curriculum development, Implementation, and Evaluation

As suggested by Tayler, reflection can be a source of freedom, which allows one to adopt own roles and expectations from those of other in order to become a better being. Reflection in nursing is linked with empowerment that gives the nurse practitioner the power, helping them to take actions that are based on insights. The course on nursing curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation that we have undertaken has been invaluable, as it has enabled us to attain knowledge, skills, and attitudes for meeting the course goals. In the paper, a reflection on how the course has been helpful in achievement of the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes that are necessary in meeting the goals of the course will be provided.

In the course, the knowledge gained in nursing curriculum development has been critical in meeting the goals of the study. The knowledge on the development of nursing education curriculum and the ever-evolving nature of the nursing practice allowed for the examination professional, social and educational issues related to the nursing education. One particular aspect that was integral in the course was learning about the need for curriculum development in nursing education. It led to appreciation of the fact that curriculum development and education in nursing is a continous and creative process, which is intended to produce a unified, evidence-based, and context-relevant curriculum.             Given the increasing need for nurse practitioners to be at the center of the care practice, Al-Ghareeb & Cooper (2016) asserts that nursing is a profession that demands nursing students to gain the required knowledge and skills in the course of their education. According to the authors, nursing knowledge and skills are critical in making judgments and management of complex clinical situations. However, the……………………………………………………………………………………………………

Statement of Purpose for Graduate Nursing

Nursing, in my opinion is a profession where one never finishes training. I was born in a Christian family and my ability to provide care to my siblings gave me the motivation to study nursing. After successfully pursuing an undergraduate degree, I have worked with all types of patients. During my work experience, I have noticed that the greatest number patients among the inpatient population consist of acutely ill patients. To care for such patients require advanced nursing skills. My excellent academic qualifications, the influence and expert knowledge of the professional staff at Georgetown University, make the institution an excellent choice to advance my studies.

The great theorist Jean Watson asserted the importance

Psychiatric nursing

My specialty is psychiatric nursing.  The clinical question I would like to explore would have to do with interventions to de-escalate an aggressive geriatric or adult patient.  Here’s the instruction given to us:
Application: Using the Data/Information/Knowledge/Wisdom Continuum
Have you ever gone online to search for a journal article on a specific topic? It is amazing to see the large number of journals that are available in the health care field. When you view the library in its entirety, you are viewing untapped data. Until you actually research for your particular topic, there is little structure. Once you have narrowed it down, you have information and once you apply the information, you have knowledge. Eventually, after thoughtful research and diligent practice, you reach the level of wisdom—knowledge applied in meaningful ways.
Are there areas in your practice that you believe should be more fully explored? The central aims of nursing informatics are to manage and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom. This continuum represents the overarching structure of nursing informatics. In this Assignment, you develop a research question relevant to your practice area and relate how you would work through the progression from data to information, knowledge, and wisdom.
To prepare:•Review the information in Figure 6-2 in Nursing Informatics and the Foundation of Knowledge.•Develop a clinical question related to your area of practice that you would like to explore. •Consider what you currently know about this topic. What additional information would you need to answer the question?•Using the continuum of data, information, knowledge, and wisdom, determine how you would go about researching your question. ?Explore the available databases in the Walden Library. Identify which of these databases you would use to find the information or data you need.?Once you have identified useful databases, how would you go about finding the most relevant articles and information??Consider how you would extract the relevant information from the articles.?How would you take the information and organize it in a way that was useful? How could you take the step from simply having useful knowledge to gaining wisdom?

To complete:
Write a 3- to 4-page paper that addresses the following:•Summarize the question you developed, and then relate how you would work through the four steps of the data, information, knowledge, wisdom continuum. Be specific. ?Identify the databases and search words you would use. ?Relate how you would take the information gleaned and turn it into useable knowledge.
•Can informatics be used to gain wisdom? Describe how you would progress from simply having useful knowledge to the wisdom to make decisions about the information you have found during your database search.
Your paper must also include a title page, an introduction, a summary, and a reference page.

Introduction

“In adult psychiatric patients, is the use of seclusion and restraint compared to the use of cognitive behavioral therapy, more effective in treatment of mental disorders?”           The health care has enormous amounts of data on different types of patient (Raghupathi & Raghupathi, 2014). Most patients with mental health conditions display aggressive behavior. However, dealing with patients that display aggressive behavior can be a huge challenge to the health care staff. Aggression is common with patients suffering from dementia or late-stage Alzheimer’s disease. There are many interventions that have been used to combat aggressive behavior among adult patients and this includes seclusion…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
