Treatment and security are the two most central components to the correctional system management. Although the two components are seen to contradict, it is imperative to note that one of the objectives of offender incarceration is to protect the community. Therefore the aspect of security in the management of corrections system involves ensuring the safety of the community, the incarcerated, and the correctional staff. However, it is also important that the focus not only revolves around the community safety, but must also be inclined in ensuring that the offenders upon their release are able to integrate successfully in the society. It is from this dual nature of the objectives of the correctional system that the classification of offenders was developed. Thus, offender classification remains a critical component of the criminal justice system for security and offender rehabilitation.
Why Classification of offenders is Important in the Correctional System The term offender classification originally began as a security component of the corrections system, where the decisions on offender classification was done based on the factors that were considered as predictive of institutional misconduct.
