What other aspects of your life are inCuenced by a sociological perspective?

Sociological theory
Read & consider
To have a sociological perspective is to look at your social world in terms of the major sociological theories.
There are three main Sociological theories:
Structuralism/Functionalism
Conflict Theory
Symbolic Interactionism
(there are also subgroups and combinations of these)
To this we are also going to add: Feminist theory.
Sociologists generally examine social interactions and social structures in terms of power (who has power over others, who controls what,
who doesn’t have it) and how these social factors shape behaviours. A sociological perspective looks at the impact of social factors such
as age, gender, ethnic group, socioeconomic group, cultural group, national group, geographical location, occupational group, education
etc.
To develop a sociological perspective we need to break down the assumptions we have about our social world. We need to be able to stand
outside our own ideological frameworks and see the everyday and the ordinary as unfamiliar and the object of scientific study. This can be
difficult!17/4/23, 12:13 pmWeek 2

3. Major social theories
Watch & consider
This video follows on from the crash course in sociology video we watched in week 1. It looks at theoretical paradigms or theories of
sociology, macro and micro distinctions and the 3 major paradigms in sociology.

4. Activity: Durkheim
Watch, consider & post
Emile Durkheim is considered a founding thinker of sociology. He focussed on how a society is formed and how it functions, or how a society
maintains order and stability. He is attributed with the creation of the functionalist perspective in sociology. His work remains very relevant
today as we explore culture and what holds a society together as well as what creates division and our response to that division in a
society.

Structural-functional theory is often criticised for focussing too much on the stability of societies and its inability to explain social change.
For these reasons, many sociologists now believe that functionalism is no longer useful as a macro-level theory.
Activity: Emile Durkheim did extensive research on suicide during the latter part of the nineteenth century. His theory as to why people
commit suicide focuses on the condition of social cohesion present in a society and experienced by the individual.
To help us understand Durkheim’s theory of social cohesion, let’s undertake a critical analysis of Australia’s welfare and health.
Go to Australia’s Welfare 2019 or the Australian Bureau of Statistics and find either some welfare or health statistics that support Durkheim’s
theory

structures that are stable or have gradually progressed over time rather than changing abruptly as conflict theory would suggest?

society have a status that is viewed with prestige and something to be desired and which groups have low status and prestige and as a
result may experience scorn, disadvantage or discrimination? How much power do these groups wield?

8. Sociological Theory Today
Read & consider
These three approaches are still the main foundation of modern sociological theory, but some evolution has been seen. Structural-
functionalism was a dominant force after World War II and until the 1960s and 1970s. At that time, sociologists began to feel that structural-
functionalism did not sufficiently explain the rapid social changes happening in the United States at that time.
Conflict theory then gained prominence, as there was renewed emphasis on institutionalised social inequality. Critical theory, and the
particular aspects of feminist theory and critical race theory, focused on creating social change through the application of sociological
principles, and the field saw a renewed emphasis on helping ordinary people understand sociology principles, in the form of public
sociology.
Postmodern social theory attempts to look at society through an entirely new lens by rejecting previous macro-level attempts to explain
social phenomena. Generally considered as gaining acceptance in the late 1970s and early 1980s, postmodern social theory is a micro-level
approach that looks at small, local groups and individual reality. Its growth in popularity coincides with the constructivist aspects of
symbolic interactionism.

10. Activity: Applying the sociological perspective everyday
Read, consider & post
Benefits of applying the sociological perspective to our daily lives:
assess the truth of community held assumptions ie common sense, taken-for-granted, status quo: Are these commonly held beliefs
true? Why are they so widely held? For example where do differences in gender, ethnicity or class come from?
assess both the opportunities and the constraints that characterise our lives – how can we pursue our goals?
empowers us to participate actively in shaping our society
helps us recognise diversity and confront the challenges of living in a diverse world
Read this article which takes a sociological view on the tearing down of statues of racist historical figures: We see history more clearly after
tearing down statues of racist colonisers

11. Activity: Marginalisation
Consider & post
“What is marginalisation? Marginalisation describes a state in which individuals are living on the fringes of society because of their
compromised or severely limited access to the resources and opportunities needed to fully participate in society and to live a decent life.
Marginalised people experience a complex, mutually reinforcing mix of economic, social, health and early-life disadvantage, as well as
stigma.” (Cruwys et al., 2013, p.4)
Consider a group in Australia that can be identified as marginalised based on the definition above, for example, Indigenous Australians,
unemployed people and welfare-reliant single mothers. The sociological perspective provides a way for us to analyse and explain
marginalisation. We can analyse the social structures that shape society at a macro-level or we can look at the social interactions that
occur in a specific situation at a micro-level.
In the following activity think of the social structures in Australian society and the social interactions in a specific situation that might
contribute to the marginalisation of that group. Then consider what social changes need to be made to ensure social inclusion.

Diagnosis of Schizophrenia Spectrum and Other Psychotic Disorders

Assignment: Diagnosis of Schizophrenia Spectrum and Other Psychotic Disorders

This week, you have focused on key symptoms related to schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders. Now, in this Assignment, you practice diagnosing in this area.

This is your fifth practice in diagnosing mental disorders. When reviewing the case study, remember that social workers keep a wide focus on several potential syndromes, analyzing patterns of symptoms, risks, and environmental factors. Narrowing down from that wider focus happens naturally as you match the individual symptoms, behaviors, and risk factors against criteria and other information in the  DSM-5-TR.

Here are a few tips or reminders:

· Catatonia is a specifier, although it does have a code. It even appears on a line of its own and may look like a code. However, it cannot be used as a diagnosis on its own.

· Remember to include all of the words that go with the diagnostic code.

Note: Remember that symptoms can occur in many disorders. As a result, all disorders in the  DSM-5-TR covered up until this point may factor into your diagnosis (for example, as a possible additional disorder you diagnose).

To Prepare

· Review the case study for this week.

· Start by familiarizing yourself with the disorders from the  DSM-5-TR found in the Learning Resources this Week.

· Look within the noted sections for symptoms, behaviors, or other features the client presents within the case study.

· If some of the symptoms in the case study cause you to suspect an  additional disorder,  then research any of the previous disorders covered so far in the course.

· This mirrors real social work practice where you follow the symptoms.

· Review the correct format for how to write the diagnosis noted below. Be sure to use this format.

· Remember: When using Z codes, stay focused on the psychosocial and environmental impact on the client within the last 12 months.

By Day 7

Submit your diagnosis for the client in the case. Follow the guidelines below.

· The diagnosis should appear on one line in the following order.  Note: Do not include the plus sign in your diagnosis. Instead, write the indicated items next to each other.

Code + Name + Specifier (appears on its own first line) Z code (appears on its own line next with its name written next to the code)

Then, in 1–2 pages, respond to the following:

· Explain how you support the diagnosis by specifically identifying the criteria from the case study.

· Describe in detail how the client’s symptoms match up with the specific diagnostic criteria for the disorder (or all the disorders) that you finally selected for the client. You do not need to repeat the diagnostic code in the explanation.

· Identify the differential diagnosis you considered.

· Explain why you excluded this diagnosis/diagnoses.

· Explain the specific factors of culture that are or may be relevant to the case and the diagnosis, which may include the cultural concepts of distress.

· Explain why you chose the Z codes you have for this client.

· Remember: When using Z codes, stay focused on the psychosocial and environmental impact on the client within the last 12 months

Your assessor will follow the below process when marking your written assignment:
• assess your responses to each question, and sub-parts if applicable, and then determine whether you have demonstrated competence in each question.
• determine if, on a holistic basis, your responses to the questions have demonstrated overall competence.
You must be deemed to be demonstrated in all assessment items in order to be awarded the units of competency in this subject, including:
• all of the exam questions
• the written and oral assignment.
‘Not yet demonstrated’ and resubmissions
Should sections of your assignment be marked as ‘Not yet demonstrated’ you will be given an additional opportunity to amend your responses so that you can demonstrate your competency to the required level.
You must address the assessor’s feedback in your amended responses. You only need amend those sections where the assessor has determined you are ‘Not yet demonstrated’.
Make changes to your original submission. Use a different text colour for your resubmission. Your assessor will be in a better position to gauge the quality and nature of your changes. Ensure you leave your first assessor’s comments in your assignment, so your second assessor can see the instructions that were originally provided for you. Do not change any comments made by a Kaplan assessor.
Units of competency
This written assignment is your opportunity to demonstrate your competency against these units:
Unit code Unit name
FNSRSK511 Undertake risk identification
FNSPRM613 Grow financial businesses

Note that the written and oral assignment is one of two assessments required to meet the requirements of the units of competency.
We are here to help
If you have any questions about this written assignment, you can post your query at the ‘Ask your Tutor’ forum in your subject room. You can expect an answer within 24 hours of your posting from one of our technical advisers or student support staff.
Start here
Throughout this assessment we will be using a case study to explore the five (5) units of competency. You will need to read the case study first and refer to it throughout the subject.
The case study: Capital City Finance and Mortgage Brokers (CCF & MB), can be accessed from the subject room.
Business management skills
Background
Refer to the Case study business profile for Capital City Finance and Mortgage Brokers (CCF & MB) located in the subject room.
George and Mildred are very happy with the way you provide service to your clients and your contribution to building the business. They now want you to take the next step into a more senior role of general manager and turn your focus to expanding the business, by building relationships through strategic alliances with selected real estate agents, accountants and legal firms. They also want you to consider how CCF & MB can consolidate its relationships with its existing strategic partners.
Task 1 — Developing and nurturing relationships with clients, other professionals and third-party referrers
George and Mildred require you to write two (2) growth plans.
• The first growth plan will outline how you will strengthen the strategic relationships you already have with a number of real estate agents, accountant and legal firms.
• The second growth plan will outline how you will identify and foster new relationships with other real estate agents, accountants and legal firms
The layout and content of each plan should address the following:
• Identify the business objectives and needs.
• Capital City Finance and Mortgage Brokers (CCF & MB) does not have a vision statement. You will need to create one. (In the first growth plan you will outline how you developed, reviewed and finalised the vision statement).
• Outline the policies and procedures that are essential for the growth plan to be functional, effective and meet legislative requirements.
• Conduct sufficient market research to identify key relationship opportunities and what will be required to maintain and attract relationships.
• Outline how you could use and cooperate with other professionals and third parties to expand and enhance the reputation of the organisation.
• Segment the relationships and tailor the plan for each.
• Clearly identify the priorities for each relationship based on the overall vision and objectives of the business.
• Set appropriate growth targets.
• Develop an action plan to achieve the growth targets.
• Review existing business work activities and confirm they support the business growth plans.
• Outline who will need to be consulted during implementation of your plan.
• Outline how you will monitor and adjust the plan.
You can use a suitable template that you are familiar with or have found on the internet or you can utilise the template provided below.
When completing this task, assumptions are permitted, although they must not be in conflict with the information provided in the background information.

Task 4 — Improving the business
Over the last few months business for CCF & MB has been very good with a number of new clients coming on board as a result of implementing your business growth and marketing plans. However, neither you or the business owners are satisfied with maintaining the status quo; as you and they are committed to a program of continuous improvement.
You all feel that CCF & MB’s competitive advantage needs to be strengthened and a SWOT should be undertaken to establish CCF & MB’s strengths and weaknesses including benchmarking the business against the industry. You now decide that you will carry out a diagnosis of the business including a SWOT analysis and a benchmarking exercise to improve CCF &MB’s competitive advantage and its business. You are to produce a document covering your diagnosis, which will be distributed amongst CCF & MB’s key personnel.
As a minimum, your document should cover the following:
• Identify the business priorities, objectives, needs and requirements.
• The data and tools you have used as part of your diagnosis to identify CCF & MB’s competitive advantage.
• A SWOT analysis to identify CCF & MB’s strengths and weaknesses, its threats and opportunities.
• How you identified and sourced relevant benchmarking data.
• How you selected the key indicators (and who you consulted with) for your benchmarking exercise.
• A consolidated list of the areas for improvement (this must include at least three (3) different financial businesses) you have identified with a cost-benefit ratio established for each of them.
• Outline the stakeholders you consulted with to reach agreement on the areas of improvement and the success factors.
• Recommendations on the changes that may be required that will affect existing workflows or CCF & MB’s organisational structure.
• A high-level action plan that will implement and monitor the recommended changes to be made.

Grow Wealth Management is a mortgage and investment brokers that was established in 2010. It offers a range of services including referrals for a range of personal and home loans, term deposits and share market investments.

Its Head Office is in Sydney, but it has several branches throughout NSW.

You are employed as a Customer Service Manager at the broker’s Nambucca branch.

Today you have been forwarded an enquiry (reference code BC250417) from a customer in Nambucca through the Head Office in Sydney.

The customer (Barbara Tan) wants to buy an investment property worth about $400,000 and has $80,000 for a deposit. They want to rent the property out and negatively gear it.

Complete the following activities:

Research these on the internet until you find one that you consider to be the best loan for this customer.

(Write summary of the home loan that you consider to be the best loan for this customer.)

1. Prepare for a meeting with the client.

Make sure that you are familiar with any conditions attached to the mortgage that you have selected. During the meeting, you must:

· Follow the banking code of practice and financial services legislation by clearly explaining the product to the client.
