Case 5.42

5.42 (LO 1, 3, 4, 5) Ethics and budgeting Faced with three young children who were always complaining “I’m bored,” Ann Newton looked for an interesting after-school activity. Finding nothing available in the community, she decided to solve her problem by renting an old bakery and turning it into Kiddie Kitchen. Three afternoons a week, Ann, her children, and several other children gathered to learn the art of cooking. In less than five years, Ann’s business grew to over 30 franchised kitchens located throughout the state. In 2005, she retired from active management of the company and sold the majority of her stock to Bernice Mayfield, who now runs the firm.c05PlanningAndForecastingInAManufacturing Setting. Today, Kiddie Kitchen has 100 franchised locations and 50 corporate locations up and down the East Coast. The company is organized into five regional territories, each run by a director who reports to the vice president of operations. In addition to the vice president of operations, executive manage-ment includes the CFO, the vice president of marketing, and the vice president of human resources. All executive personnel work at the corporate headquarters, now located in Raleigh, North Carolina. Each director maintains a regional office, complete with an administrative staff. Shortly after taking over the company, Mayfield revamped the budgeting process, replacing a bottom-up process that had been in place since the early 1990s with a top-down process. Since the new budget process influences the bonus compensation a director can earn, directors have a great deal of interest in developing the budget. At the beginning of the budget cycle, regional directors receive corporate directives concerning the coming year’s budget. These directives include projected growth in locations and revenue, salary increases, and allocated corporate expenses. Directors prepare three budgets—one for franchised locations, one for corporate locations, and one for administrative costs associated with the regional offices. These budgets are passed up to the corporate office for consolidation into the corporate budget. Max Green is director of the southeast region. His approach to preparing the budget for the com-ing year budget is a typical example of budget preparation. He passed the corporate budget directives to his accountant, Henri Duvall, who prepared the first draft of the budget. When Green reviewed the draft, he did not like what he saw. Budgeted net income was too high—so high that his region would never meet the target. He asked Duvall to make some adjustments. The corporate directive had projected a general price level increase of 2–4%. The range was intended to allow higher cost-of-living areas, such as Boston and New York, to budget higher levels of cost increases than lower cost-of-living areas. But even though Green’s office was located in the lowest cost-of-living area in the country, he told Duvall to budget an across-the-board increase of 4%. Green knew that as long as he was within the directive’s guidelines, the corporate office wouldn’t question the increase. Green also told Duvall that the region would open ten new stores during the coming year and that the budget should reflect enough start-up expenses to cover the new locations. Green knew that no region had ever opened more than seven stores in a single year. In fact, he thought he would be lucky to open five new stores in the coming year. Since Green had a reputation for retaliating against employees who chose to ignore his requests, Duvall made the changes without questioning them. The result was a $250,000 reduction in budgeted net income. Duvall, a certified management accountant, had a wife and three children, and could not afford to lose his job and his generous benefit package. Besides, his wife was in line to become owner of one of the new franchised stores in the coming year.

Required

a. Why would Green care about the level of budgeted net income?

b. What do you think Mayfield’s reaction would be if she learned of Green’s actions?

c. What does Duvall have to gain from his actions? Does he have anything to lose?

d. Refer to the IMA’s Statement of Ethical Professional Practice in Exhibit 1.8 (pages 1-20 and 1-21). What responsibilities does Duvall have in this situation? Did he violate the Statement? If so, how?

Creative expressions can broaden your perspective

Investigate how creative expressions can broaden your perspective. You will do this by reflection on the impact that television and video art had upon a person. You may write about your own experiences, or you may interview a friend or family member. In either case, you should remain focused on the objective of evaluating and demonstrating how a point of view is changed through the influence of television and video art. The television programs in this Assignment could have been viewed on a traditional television set, but they could also be from an internet series, streaming on a smartphone, or viewed through another medium. While movies are often shown on television, for this Assignment, you will want to look into television programs or series in particular. Please check with your instructor if you have a question about programming that may suit the Assignment. 1. Open with an introduction to the paper. Give the reader a sense of context for the Assignment. Offer a preview of main points and a thesis statement. 2. Introduce two television programs from youth or adolescence. What do you or your interviewee remember about each show? Describe the experience of watching each program. How did each show have an impact upon a view of the world? What was learned, changed, or influenced? 3. Introduce two television programs from adulthood. What do you or your interviewee remember about each show? Describe the experience of watching each program. How did each show have an impact upon a view of the world? What was learned, changed, or influenced? 4. After this investigation, discuss the impact of television to change a point of view. Was there a marked influence? How was the video art able to open up a new perspective or introduce new ideas? What may have made television more effective or more influential? The work should be at least 500 words in length and must use at least one outside source that is cited in APA style. Check the Kaplan Writing Center for information about use and citation of sources.

When looking at profit from this theory’s perspective, the idea is that profits will help empower and sustain the community as a whole. Profits are more than just a benefit for shareholders.

The concept behind the triple bottom line is that companies are responsible to all their stakeholders. This includes everyone involved with the company, whether directly or indirectly. It also includes the planet on which we all live. This approach views shareholders as very important stakeholders. This approach also recognizes the need for companies to consider other important stakeholders in the company, including employees, customers, vendors, and the larger community.

Before writing this week’s discussion posting, review this MindTools article, “The Triple Bottom Line: Measuring Your Organization’s Wider Impact,” for more details on the triple bottom line.

This Week’s Discussion Post

For this week’s discussion, please respond to the following:

How would you implement the triple bottom line (people, planet, profit) concept at your chosen company, whether you are using the snack food company scenario or the company of your choice?

Keep the following format in mind as you complete this week’s discussion:

  • Profit: When looking at profit from this theory’s perspective, the idea is that profits will help empower and sustain the community as a whole. Profits are more than just a benefit for shareholders. Briefly explain your approach.
  • People: Describe your approach to caring about suppliers, customers, employees, and the community. For example, one way to care about employees is to provide a good working environment, training and development opportunities, and health care.
  • Planet: Explain your approach to minimizing your company’s impact on the environment. For example, your company might develop a process to minimize waste or reduce energy usage, such as using recycled materials in its production process.

Post at least one substantive comment to another student’s post.

Notes

  • Textbook Chapter 14, “Social Responsibility & Sustainability,” pages 259–270, provides additional detail on this topic.
  • You will use the information from this discussion post and the feedback you receive in the Social Responsibility section of your Week 8 assignment, Operations, Technology, Management, and Social Responsibility Plan (With Financials).

In your response, include:

1. A brief description of your business (name of the company, what you do, what products or services you are selling)

2. Use the 3 headings (People, Planet, Profit) and discuss per the instructions. Specific examples of what you will do at your company are required.

Describe the problem from Jeff Bliss’s perspective as well as from Ms. Phung’s perspective.

In Chapter 12, Wardle (2013) summarizes the important characteristics  of a culturally relevant teacher. Use this information as a guide or  resource throughout this assignment to help inspire your thinking as you  apply your knowledge of culturally relevant pedagogy toward specific  solutions to problems facing a teacher with a very diverse student  population. This exercise provides excellent practice over the  application of culturally relevant principles in the design of effective  instructional solutions. You will need to design such instructional  solutions within the Final Project, so it is very important to practice  such skills here. Specifically, for this assignment, you will view a  brief video taken with a cell phone by a student in a high school social  studies class. Student “Jeff Bliss” Mad at Teacher at Duncanville High (Links to an external site.) (Bliss,  2013) documents a meltdown Bliss experienced during his World History  course at Duncanville High School in Duncanville, Texas.

Review the Instructor Guidance before this task. In your paper, include the following:

  • Address the items below based on your inferences and ideas after viewing the events captured in the cellphone video. (2 points)
    • Describe the problem from Jeff Bliss’s perspective as well as from Ms. Phung’s perspective.
    • Explain what probably caused it.
    • Identify who benefits and who loses.
    • Indicate your position on this issue.
    • Discuss how a more equitable, culturally relevant approach to the class could improve the situation.
    • Express how Ms. Phung might respond differently to Jeff’s concerns.
    • Describe any equity strategies you noticed or inferred being implemented in the video. (2.5 points)
    • Suggest at least one strategy for each of the following four  categories that the teacher could have utilized to help meet student  needs in a more equitable fashion:
      • Instruction
      • Classroom Environment
      • Student Grouping
      • Student Recognition/leadership
    • Describe evidence of any culturally relevant pedagogy in action in the cellphone video. (2.5. points)
    • List at least three strategies that could be used to create a more  culturally relevant classroom. Such strategies might be drawn from the  following areas:
      • Maximizing academic success through relevant instructional experiences
      • Addressing cultural competence through reinforcing students’ cultural integrity
      • Involving students in the construction of knowledge
      • Building on students’ interests and linguistic resources
      • Tapping home and community resources
      • Understanding students’ cultural knowledge
      • Using interactive and constructivist teaching strategies
      • Examining the curriculum from multiple perspectives
      • Promoting critical consciousness through opportunities to challenge predominant elements of the students’ social norms

If you are enrolled in the MAED Program, it is imperative that you  keep copies of all assignments completed in this course. You will return  to them for the portfolio that you will create in your final MAED  course. This portfolio is a culminating project that will demonstrate  that you have met program outcomes.

Review this week’s Instructor Guidance for additional information  about completing this assignment. Contact your instructor for  clarifications about this or any assessment in the course before the due  date using the “Ask Your Instructor” forum.
