The question is not, Can they reason? nor, Can they talk? but, Can they suffer?

Please pick one of the following questions to answer for the forum this week:

  • Jeremy Bentham argued that when we think about whether someone/something ought to count morally that ” The question is not, Can they reason? nor, Can they talk? but, Can they suffer?” a.) Why would it make sense for a utilitarian like Bentham to make such a statement? b.) Do you think that he’s right about the ability to suffer as what we ought to look at when we’re thinking about whether someone/something counts morally? c.) If we took this seriously what would it mean for our treatment of non-human animals?
  • Immanuel Kant’s moral philosophy is extremely strict about what we ought and ought not do. So strict that he argued that it is always and everywhere wrong to lie. a.) Explain why Kant thought that lying was always wrong using the categorical imperative as a guide. b.) Explain whether you think Kant was right or wrong about this lying business and make sure to use clear examples to help your explanation along. If he was wrong, what’s an example of when it’s morally ok to lie, and if he was right, what’s an example where it looks ok to lie but it really isn’t ok?
  • Kant focused on the intentions behind your actions when assessing the morality of the act, while Bentham and Mill focused on the consequences of your act when assessing it’s moral worth. Of the two, consequences and intentions, which do you think is more important when it comes time to assess the morality of actions? Do good intentions save a bad outcome, or vice versa? Make sure to provide some clear and specific examples in your explanation. Also note that while it’s possible to look at both intentions and consequences, for any act it looks like we can only really prioritize one of those.

• A brief literature review to summarise the existing knowledge in this space, and justify your proposed project.
• Your research question and the knowledge gap that it will address.
• A summary of the key elements of the methodology that you think would be the most appropriate methodology to use to explore your research question (ie grounded theory, phenomenology etc), and why it is appropriate for exploring your research question.
• Your methods, including how you will select your participants (in this case, four people whom you already know) and your interview process.
• Your interview questions.
• A personal reflection on your motivation for exploring this research question, any ethical or cultural considerations for your project, and anything that could create a risk of bias in your data (ie interviewing friends).
• An appendix containing records of the feedback received on your interview questions (such as a copy of the interview questions with tracked changes).
• Your assessment submission must address all of these points
Assessment Criteria:
• Justification of your research project (30%)
• Summary of methodology and methods (40%)
• Reflective writing on motivation and potential for bias (10%)

Nursing Research: Developing a Researchable Question

(Course Instructor)

Grand Canyon University

(Student’s Name)

PICOT Question Format

Introduction

The main purpose of conducting a research is to solve a specific problem in question, (Boswell, Boswell & Cannon, 2014). However, it is important that the research problem is the one, which is researchable and supported by available data, (Chudleigh & Riding, 2014). Sometimes a research problem may not be researchable and thus can be deemed as inappropriate. Many factors influence the choice of a research problem and these include ethics, morals and variables, (Carman et al., 2013). In order for one to have a researchable study problem, the research question should have variables, which are measurable and should be defined clearly, (Bonsall, 2012). However, the measurability of the variables may not be necessary in qualitative research, as it is more of a descriptive study.  In order to develop a researchable research problem a PICOT format is used, (Rios, Ye & Thabane, 2010).

PICOT Analysis

A Picot format is a framework that is used in the development of focused clinical questions, (Rios, Ye & Thabane, 2010). It is an important effective format for creating a summary of research questions, (Napavalley.edu, 2015). PICOT Question is a short form for:

P – Stands for Population, Which constitutes the population from which the study will draw samples

I – intervention, treatment that the subjects shall receive

C – Comparison, refers to what the study shall draw as reference

O – Outcome, refer to the results to be measured in order to measure the effectiveness of the chosen interventions.

T – Time, refer to the time it would take to conduct the study

Researchable Question

In girls aged 9-13 years, how does the use of cervical cancer vaccine, compared to not using the vaccine, influence their risks of developing cervical cancer during their early ages? The PICOT elements concerning the researchable problem are P – Girls aged 9-13 years, I- Use of cervical cancer vaccine, C – not using the cervical cancer vaccine, O – Risks of developing cervical cancer, T – Early ages.

Nature of the Problem

Cervical cancer is a cancer that develops during early stages and affects the cervix of the patient, (Hirschmann, 2010). Cervical cancer may not have symptoms in its early stages of infection. However, the symptoms may occur in form of minimal bleeding that can be observed after sex, between periods or after menopause, (Webmd.com, 2015). Cervical cancer is common among the females although it affects men. The chances in developing a cervical cancer can be reduced if girls are vaccinated before they reach sexual maturity.

Description of the Problem

Majority of cervical cancer cases are caused by a virus called human papillomavirus (HPV), (Krueger, 2010). Although there are over 100 strains of HPV, only two strains are known to trigger cervical cancer. HPV- 16 and HPV-18 are the two known strains that when they attack the cervix during sexual contact, can attack cervical cells and trigger development of cancer. Cervical cancer has symptoms, which are hard to notice and this makes it hard for the victims to know that they have developed the infection. Although uses of condoms have been noted to prevent infection against HPV, it however, cannot prevention cervical cancer infection.

Impact of the Problem: PICOT Question

Cervical cancer can cause many complications, which in addition to expensive treatment regime, may lead to surgery that can lead one to lose her womb. Severe cases can also lead to excessive bleeding and kidney failure. Early detection through screening can be helpful in detecting and early diagnosis of the disease, (Misiri, 2014). The chances of one developing cervical cancer can be reduced greatly by getting a HPV vaccine at an early age.

The inability to recognize the symptoms of cervical cancer makes it hard to diagnose, (Kmietowicz, 2014). The disease can be fatal depending on the stage to which it is discovered. The chances of survival under the different stages vary, being less than 20% at the fourth stage of the disease. The chance of survival at the early stage is 80%, whereas at stage two and three, the chances range between 30-90%, (Nhs.uk, 2015). These statistics shows the seriousness the disease poses in terms of the ability to detect and diagnose. Although it is a potential source of fatality, it can be prevented. If vaccination is effected at an early stage, it will lead to improvement of the quality of outcomes and removal of unnecessary surgical procedures and other diagnostic processes such as chemotherapy, which are often unpleasant, (Luciani, Prieto-Lara & Vicari, 2011).

PICOT Question

Gravity of the Problem           Cervical cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide. In the United States, screening is a routine and the cases of infections are minimal, (Smith, Brooks, Cokkinides, Saslow & Brawley, 2013). Despite the successes of the Pap tests, there are considerable numbers of women who suffer from the disease. According to cervical cancer statistics, in 2011, about 4,092 women died while 12,109 were infected with the disease, (Prevention, 2015). Therefore, in order to eradicate the disease, the marked success of HPV vaccine makes it the viable solution in curbing the spread of the disease PICOT Question…………………………………………………………………………………………………….GET THE COMPLETED ASSIGNMENT

Poor children deserve a question in the presidential debates

No child living in America today should have to worry about whether they’ll have a place to sleep at night or enough food to eat. But these are daily realities for the 1 in 6 poor children in this country. Children like me.

Growing up on the North Side of Minneapolis, I know what it means to struggle. I’ve been homeless, spending school nights sleeping on park benches. I’ve been hungry, not knowing where my next meal would come from. I know what it means to have to work to support your family when you need to be focusing on school. And I know that other kids shouldn’t have to face these struggles. Every child in America should be able to focus on learning, growing, and just being a kid.

Did you know it’s been 20 years since there was a question about how to address child poverty in a presidential debate? But a child is born into poverty every minute in this country. Those children will face hunger, homelessness, illness, violence and toxic stress. And those children deserve answers about how the next president of the United States is going to make sure they get a fair shot at a better life.

Ignoring this issue on the national debate stage sends a signal that children living in poverty are not a priority. To fix the problem, we need to put a spotlight on it.

That’s why I’m calling for a question in the presidential debates about child poverty. I want to know what the next president is going to do to make sure the next generation won’t struggle like I did. Will you join me?

Keep in mind that this is a proposal for research; you will not actually be conducting the study. Therefore, feel free to use a design that clearly addressed the issues in which you are interested, irrespective of the level of complexity if implemented in the ‘real world’. For your hypothetical research project, assume that you have adequate level of funding and sufficient time to complete the study. The following is a breakdown of the required elements of the proposal:
