Strategic Training and Development Report: Jiffy Lube International

The Training Top 125 for 2016
For the past 16 years, Training magazine has ranked organizations based on their employer-sponsored training and development programs.  The list below contains the top five organizations for 2016.

Company    2016 Rank    2015 Rank    Other Recognition by
Training Magazine
Jiffy Lube International     1    2
Keller Williams Realty Inc.    2    1    Outstanding Training Initiative
CHG Healthcare Services    3    4
Capital BlueCross    4    3
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan    5    5

Details about the selection process and about all 125 organizations ranked by Training can be found at the magazine’s website:

You should also browse the trainingmag.com website for additional articles related to the Top 125 list.  The January/February 2016 issue contains a wealth of information.  Since the top five companies in 2016 were also the top five companies in 2015, you should browse the trainingmag.com website for earlier articles about the company you choose to explore.

YOUR ASSIGNMENT

Choose one of Training magazine’s top five organizations and investigate the organization’s strategic training and development initiatives.  -JIFFY LUBE INTERNATIONAL
Visit the organization’s web site for business information (hint: look at the organization’s annual report for information about financial expenditures, company priorities, and competition) and use the UMUC library to conduct a search for references to the organization.  Don’t forget to look for YouTube videos by or about the organization.

Prepare a 3-5 page report based on your research.
Using the criteria Training uses to rank organizations as well as from your own research, prepare a 3-5 page report about strategic training and development in your chosen organization.  Your report should include, but is not limited to, the following elements:

1.    A description of the organization and its major products and/or services (a brief description — no more than two or three paragraphs).  Try to find information about the organization’s mission and/or goals and how its training function is organized.  The organization’s website and its annual report, particularly the letter to shareholders at the beginning of the annual report, are good sources of information.  Be sure to cite the specific web page where you found information used in your report.

2.    An assessment of the characteristics of the organization that help it excel in training and development.  Include factors such as (but not limited to) the total budget for or amount of money spent on training and development; the level of employee involvement in training and development activities; the type(s) of training and development opportunities offered; the organization’s investment in and/or use of technology for training; and the availability of benefits such as tuition assistance.

3.    An assessment of how the TD function operates in the organization.  How is the TD function organized?  For a description of three training organizational models, read http://www.trainingindustry.com/wiki/entries/organizational-models-in-training.aspx.  Does the organization use training needs analyses (TNAs) to identify performance gaps or the need for new skills to support business strategies and initiatives?  Does the organization employ the ADDIE, RID, or Agile approaches to design training?  Do the TD professionals in the organization display any of the competencies described in the ATD competency model mentioned in the Week 1 lecture?

Support your opinions and statements with a minimum of four references from sources published within the last ten years.  You can cite scholarly and practitioner-oriented journals, course materials, newspaper articles, YouTube videos by or about the organization, the organization’s annual report, and the organization’s web site, but not Wikipedia, vendor websites, or other non-academic sources.  The UMUC library can help you identify appropriate sources.

Use APA format for citations, references, and quotations.  This means your list of references should start on a separate page, and should be double spaced, with a hanging indent and no spaces between entries.  For help with APA format, please consult the Writing Resources module in the Course Resources section of our classroom.

Safe Assign Originality Report.

Final Essay InstructionsFinal Essay Instructions

Complete a researched critical essay of a minimum of 6 pages on one or more works of fiction selected from our textbook.

The critical essay must follow classic essay structure: the introduction with thesis, the body, and the conclusion. The thesis must make an arguable claim about the meaning of the text you’ve chosen to write about (or some major aspect of that text). The thesis may not be focused on the author or the author’s life. You must analyze and interpret the text on the page. The body of the essay must support the thesis by using information and examples from the assigned readings and must include additional, documented information from at least three credible sources from the library databases. Your textbook may count as only one source, regardless of the number of literary works that you cite from it. You are required to obtain at least three sources from the library’s databases, such as the Literature Resource Center and the History Study Center. Wikipedia, Shmoop, eNotes, Spark Notes, and other such sites are not credible sources for academic writing, and if you use them, they will not count towards the requirements for this assignment.

All paraphrases, summaries, and quotations from your sources, including your textbook, must be documented in strict accordance with MLA eighth-edition standards.  The documentation must include attributive phrases and/or in-text citations and a works-cited page. You may refer to the “Resources” area of our blackboard page for guidance on citations and formatting.

To eliminate plagiarism, you are required to submit your essay to obtain the Safe Assign Originality Report. In the Originality Report, do not be concerned if sources are highlighted.  This highlighting merely indicates that other students have located the same credible sources as you have located. Also, do not be concerned if quoted material is highlighted. You must be certain, however, that you have enclosed quoted material in quotation marks and have provided corresponding attributive phrases and/or in-text citations. If paraphrases or other material that is not from a source and is not a quotation is highlighted, this highlighting indicates that the percentage of similarity is too high, and may be cause for concern.

To be graded and to receive credit, your essay must be submitted as a PDF (.pdf) or Microsoft Word document (.doc or .docx) to the correct link. Email submissions will not be accepted.

Minimum Requirements:

  • 6 full pages (not including work cited page)
  • 3 library database sources
  • Your textbook is one source (even if you use several sections of it), and it is not a library database source.
  • No plagiarism or self-stealing
  • No use of unreliable sources such as Wikipedia, Shmoop, SparkNotes, etc.
  • Analysis and interpretation–not a report
  • MLA formatting and citations
  • Polished, grammatical writing
  • Clear, organized essay structure
  • Clearly stated thesis which is supported by evidence throughout the paper
  • Interprets one of the pieces of short fiction in our textbook. Essays about other topics will not earn credit.

Assessment Task 2 Instructions
Carefully read the following:
Cheryl and Anthony Weber are taking out a construction loan, so they can build their new home. They have found the block of land and they’ve had an initial conversation with two different builders. They have never built it is all new to them. They are happy to receive as much support in the process as possible.
They are both busy with their work and have decided that whichever builder they use, they will get assistance from the building company to assist with project management.
The land is going to cost $200 000 and the build will cost $250 000. They have a deposit of $180 000 which is partly from savings and assisted by a non-repayable parental gift.
They are confident they can afford the repayments as they will be only slightly dearer than their current rental costs.
Their loan application for an ANZ Residential Investment Land Loan with Breakfree discounts has been submitted, and they are coming to a meeting with you to look at what happens next.
They already have a plan for the building and have submitted a Development Application to the council.

You receive the following email from the clients Hi Mortgage Broker.
Thank you for all your help during the construction of our investment property. We couldn’t have done it without you.
I have one concern, which I am sure that you can clear up. Now that the house has been built and everyone has been paid their fees, I am not sure that we are paying the lowest possible rate. Can we change our loan over to another one with the same lender now?
Please check that and come back to me with any suggestions. Regards,
Mr. and Mrs. Weber
14. Research whether the client’s loan can be changed.
Use the internet (you may use the chat function on the ANZ website) to determine whether the clients can change their loan to another with lower interest payments.

Calculate what those monthly repayments would be and compare this to the repayments that the client has.
15. Send an email to the client (your assessor).
The text of the email should be in grammatically correct English, written in an appropriate (polite, business-like) style.
