Speech Tracking Auditory Training Approach

Rationale: To determine communication status, auditory perceptual assessments are administered by Audiologists and SLPs. All clinicians seeing individuals who are identified with, or at-risk for, an auditory-related communication disorder should have a thorough working knowledge of these assessments, and of how to use and include them in the assessment and management of clients across the lifespan. They may be utilized both pre and post intervention. They may assess a person’s suitability for technology. They may identify areas of need, and they may help us to establish overall communication status.

Once baseline information has been obtained utilizing an auditory perceptual assessment, Auditory Training can be administered and overseen by Audiologists and SLPs. All clinicians must therefore have a working knowledge of Auditory Training and how to incorporate it into the management of clients of all ages. Auditory Training has been associated with maximizing residual hearing, enhancing benefits from technology, improving listening and processing skills, and positively impacting quality of life.

Each student is to research three topics: answer each question separately and separate each one in groups

1. CHILD Questionnaire

2. Speech Tracking Auditory Training Approach

3. Words in Noise Test (WIN)

Identify if the tool is for use in the assessment in auditory perception or Auditory Training

Winston Churchill’s Iron Curtain Speech

Case Study: Winston Churchill’s Iron Curtain Speech There are many ways to get a feel for the events of the 20th Century. One way is through the analysis of primary source documents. Few documents set the stage for the second half than Winston Churchill’s 1946 speech in Fulton, Missouri. Officially entitled “The Sinews of Peace”, it came to be known as “The Iron Curtain Speech”, in which Churchill laid out the challenges for the West in general, and the US and Britain in particular, regarding what would soon be known as the Cold War. Your assignment this week is to not just read Churchill’s speech, but read between the lines to answer the following questions in a well written 2-3 page document: 1. Churchill believes the Soviet Union “desires the fruits of war and the indefinite expansion of their power and doctrines.” How might those expansionist desires challenge the Western principle of national political self determination, a cause it championed during World War 2? 2. Churchill’s speech acknowledges “Russia’s need to be secure on her western borders,” but at the same time it raises concerns about Soviet actions in Eastern Europe. Is Churchill being inconsistent? Or does he provide concrete justifications for those concerns? 3. In his speech, Churchill asserts “There is nothing they (the Russians) admire so much as strength, and nothing for which they have less respect for than military weakness.” If he isn’t advocating a direct military confrontation with the Soviet Union, then what is he saying? 4. Churchill delivered this speech to an American audience, but after reading it one might conclude it could have been given in any western country. Why did he pick the US?http://www.historyguide.org/europe/churchill.html

Winston Churchill’s Iron Curtain Speech

Winston Churchill’s “Sinews of Peace” speech was delivered at Westminster College with the aim of charting out the relations among the Allies after World War 2. The speech was delivered in the US because of the country’s crucial role in winning the war and consequent emergence of the US as an undisputed world superpower. Moreover having lost the British elections, the wartime prime minister’s words had lost some traction in his homeland, the former superpower. Indeed the US was to address Churchill’s concerns by enacting the Truman Doctrine two years later that was to later lead to independence for the Baltic States(Encyclopaedia Britannica, undated). The cold war pitting US (and NATO) versus Russia was to last forty six years.

Churchill’s speech aimed to invigorate the British-American alliance and to chart out the alliance’s direction in the face of increasingly cold relations with Soviet Union, a former ally. This cooling relationship can be traced to Stalinismand Russia winning the “Great Patriotic War” during World War 2. Having tasted the “fruits of war” after defeating Germany toregain its lost territories and extend into new ones to be in control of most of Eastern Europe, the Soviet Union put up the “Iron Curtain” – military tanks – seemingly with a view to protecting and expanding its territories and spreading thecommunist ideology.

This flew in the face of the Allies’ principles that included self-determination as captured by the League of Nations and championed during World War 2(Encyclopaedia Britannica, undated). Notably, Woodrow Wilson had listed self-determination as an important objective in a postwar world. Hence the Allies championed self-determination as a means to achieve peace during and after the war.

Stalin’s government aim to expand its powers with a view to spreading its socialist doctrines was likely to make world peace as envisioned by the British-American alliance elusive. Churchill hence speaks about Stalin’s tyrannical tendencies versus a person’s free will to political choice. He posits the latter as one of the ways for “the permanent prevention of war and the establishment of conditions of freedom and democracy as rapidly as possible in all countries” and the former as a challenge that must be dealt with pronto (The Churchill Centre, 1946).

By acknowledging “Russia’s need to be secure on her western borders”, Churchill is alive to Germany’s aggression, which was the cause of the two world wars. Indeed he is sympathetic to Russia’s plight, welcoming the country “to her rightful place among the leading nations of the world” and encouraging the “growing contacts” between Russians and the alliance people (The Churchill Centre, 1946).  So if the “Iron Curtain” was solely a deterrent to Germany’s invasion, Churchill would seemingly have no qualms about it.

But he notes that the “Iron Curtain” locks in…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………. Winston Churchill’s Iron Curtain Speech ……………………………………………………….

The keynote speech by Mikhail Gorbachev in the December 1988 UN General Assembly represented a departure from Soviet policy and the way the Soviet Union viewed the west. According to (Kanet, 1989), the previous years had witnessed foreign policies based on a tit-for-tat basis and the world was in a brink of cold war between the then superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union.  Therefore, it was imperative that one of the two world’s superpowers made a significant move to prevent the escalation of the temperatures.           Gorbachev’s choice of United Nations as the venue for the speech by Gorbachev was important, as it would send a signal to the whole world that the Soviet Union was ready and openness to being a leader for global peace leadership. Westboro Baptist Church be permitted to engage in this form of speech at such private and intimate moments for families that lost a loved one in combat?

Please watch the video https://youtu.be/0meqcKTAcMU  , Write 4-5 sentences and help me to answer on the discussion question:

Should the Westboro Baptist Church be permitted to engage in this form of speech at such private and intimate moments for families that lost a loved one in combat?

You don’t necessarily have to agree with the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court.

In the article, we learn that the Supreme Court ruled that the First Amendment protects groups that organize anti-gay protests outside military funerals.  Recently, The Westboro Baptist Church based in Topeka, Kansas, received media attention for actively attending military funerals for U.S. soldiers that were killed in action in order to express their views.

The Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) is an independent Baptist church known for its extreme stance against homosexuality and its protest activities, which include picketing at funerals for fallen members of our military and desecrating the American flag.  The church is described by many as a hate group.  In addition to anti-gay protests at military funerals, the organization pickets other celebrity funerals that are likely to get it media attention.

As they have at hundreds of funerals, the Westboro members hold signs with provocative messages, including “Thank God for dead soldiers,” `’You’re Going to Hell,” `’God Hates the USA/Thank God for 9/11,” and one that combined the U.S. Marine Corps motto, Semper Fi, with a slur against gay men.

2. Please write 2-3 sentences  as a response on two following discussions:

1. This video left me speechless, can’t believe how brainwashed these people are. I am obviously against their message, but unfortunately, I do believe they have the right to spread their dirt. They are practicing their “freedom of speech” which allows them to express their opinion. If we silence these ignorant people, we will also silence all other minorities. This would prevent the LGBTQ community and other groups from getting their civil rights.

2.  This is disgusting. I am baffled that these people think this is ok. They are disrespecting the deceased, and the deceased friends and family. I understand that the funeral was public but still, where is their sympathy or their morals. They claim to be spreading the word of God but it looks like they’re spreading hate. Hate speech, hateful conduct, bias behavior, etc. However, this is just my opinion. They have every right to exercise the first amendment. Freedom of speech. Free expression. They aren’t breaking any laws but in my opinion, this is just shameful.

Telling people that it’s too late to pray and they are going to hell. How is that ok?! The poor children are being raised into bigotry, homophobia, discrimination, & propensity. Shameful behavior. To protest at someone’s funeral, kicking the same flag that these people bury their loved ones with. I hope they win the law suit. Once again, my opinion.
