Start conversations with people at work about an idea you’ve been thinking about for awhile.

The SALES Essentials section was designed to introduce you to the concept of selling. To share information about the relationship between marketing and sales and to give you some insight into what’s involved in a sales career.

But the most important learning is to provide opportunities for you to practice some of these “beginning” selling skills in your own life–work or otherwise–to create change.

Your Final SALES Qiz is a one page “blog” that you will write about your experience applying what you’ve learned in Modules 7-9 to a personal selling situation. Choose wisely so you really give yourself the chance to feel how all of this works! You’ve only got 3 weeks so don’t make the personal selling situation too complicated but at the same time don’t make it so simple that it’s not all that interesting.

Great examples:

  • Start conversations with people at work about an idea you’ve been thinking about for awhile.
  • Using the skills and knowledge to interview for a job, internship, case competition.
  • Convincing your team (any course) to do something different that would improve your working relationship or your grade.
  • Talking to your parents about something that you want to do and they haven’t really been that excited to support you (and remember there is value to your parents if they allow you to do what you’re asking).
  • Anything that is innovative/disruptive where others have been resistant and you believe there is great value if things were to change.

Stay away from…..

  • Convincing your friends to do anything.
  • Change would only require 1 conversation.
  • Anything related or remotely related to politics.
  • Anything that is too personal for a teacher to read about you.

Step by Step Guidelines

  1. Choose your personal selling situation ASAP and submit via Canvas no later than 5/12 11:59PM.  All in Activity #3: Personal Selling Situation
  2. Use a journal and start writing down ideas every Monday and Wednesday (weeks 7-9) about how what you’re learning applies to your personal selling situation. Decide how to organize yourself–don’t wait until the last minute. This should be an ongoing activity during weeks 7-9.
  3. Start taking action as soon as you can and then immediately journal what happens–timing is key so you capture the real experience.
  4. Challenge yourself to make something happen during the 3 weeks–use what you’ve been learning to create some movement in your personal selling situation.
  5. Write a 1-1.5 page “blog” about what you have learned as a result of trying your “beginning” selling skills on a personal selling situation.

Some Ideas You May Want to Consider

  • Be very clear on what your personal selling situation is and why you care about it
  • Explain what the value would be to others if they decided to go along with your idea
  • Figure out who’s involved in making a decision
  • Have at least one discovery conversation
  • Pitch your idea if the timing is right–if not then at least explain what your pitch looks like “today”
  • Write this like a blog–engaging and story-like
  • Remember that you’re writing about your experience of trying something new and sharing what happened along the way
  • Make sure that you are applying skills and knowledge from all 3 modules–either doing it or explaining how you might do it moving forward

Discuss why people start smoking and the challenges people face in attempting to quit smoking

  1. Medical Terminology
  • It is widely known that smoking is bad for your health. If everyone knows it is so harmful, why do so many people do it? Discuss why people start smoking and the challenges people face in attempting to quit smoking.
  • Is circumcision medically necessary? What are the factors that contribute to a parent’s decision whether or not to circumcise?
  1. Math
  • Throughout this course, you have completed homework and assessments in MyMathLab, and you also have completed one assignment in Blackboard. Each of these tasks required you to use different methods for entering in the answers and submitting the assignment. For example, homework assignments require you to use the MyMathLab symbol toolbox, assessments require that you show your work in the show work window, and Blackboard assignments require you to upload a document into Blackboard. For this discussion board question, describe a challenge that you encountered while using these different platforms to submit your assignments. How did you overcome this challenge? Additionally, what tools do you use to help you submit these different types of assignments in an efficient manner?
  • Throughout this course, you have had access to unit study guides, reference sheets, note-taking guides, instructional videos, and learning aids. As we get closer to Unit VIII and the end of the course, how can you utilize these resources to start preparing for the comprehensive final exam? Next, describe your method for studying for exams.
  1. Managerial Accounting
  • Discuss which you prefer most: job costing or process costing. Include examples as you explain the reasons for your preference.
  • In your opinion, which is more difficult to work with: absorption or variable costing? Offer examples as you explain your opinion.
  1. Financial Management
  • How important is corporate governance when it comes to investing in a firm? Does a firm’s social presence need to be considered before an individual decides to invest? Why, or why not?
  • You overhear your coworker say that only the balance sheet and income statement are needed to evaluate a firm’s financial health. Do you agree with this assessment? Why, or why not? Explain.
  1. Principles of Management
  • What managers’ decisions have you seen as a course of action or program in health or safety that upheld the value of “human capital,” or people in the organization? Do you recommend a different course of action in hindsight?
  • Continuous advancements in technology are deeply affecting the way businesses are managed. Do you think technology (the Internet, for example) should radically alter the fundamental strategies and organizational structures of companies? Or do you think companies can simply graft new strategies and structures onto existing ones? How have innovations in technology affected your life and the way you do business?
  1. Business Ethics
  • Is creating energy and electricity through nuclear power plants, a sustainable energy source, in order to augment reliance on fossil fuels an ethical idea when compared to other technologies, such as solar, wind, and natural gas? If so, on what basis? If not, why, and is there anything that could bolster its ethical production?
  • Do you agree that when one enters into a disadvantageous bargaining position because of one’s own voluntary acts (such as ignoring a warning) that an otherwise exploiting act becomes morally permissible because the person assumed the risk, or is the act always impermissible because the person is especially disadvantaged? Why, or why not?

Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of a hypothetical, e-commerce start-up company of your design

Business Requirements

Overview

This is the second of a series of five sequential assignments (the course project) in which you continue to act as the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of a hypothetical, e-commerce start-up company of your design.

You have been tasked with delivering an information technology project plan in anticipation of the company relocating to a new facility. In the first course deliverable, you created a project plan inception document and supporting Gantt chart. This deliverable spelled out the company’s background information and business and provided an overview of the company’s information system infrastructure.

In this second course project deliverable, you are responsible for developing the business requirements to be incorporated into the information systems design you are creating.

Procuring quality business requirements is a critical step when designing quality information systems. Completing a quality requirements document captures user needs and expectations to facilitate the proper design of the company’s infrastructure and information systems.

This assignment consists of two parts:

Part 1: Business Requirements

You will develop a 5–7-page business requirements document for your hypothetical e-commerce company as part of the overall information systems project plan you are creating. Using the Business Requirements Template [DOCX], you will speculate on the company’s current and future requirements. Your assumptions need to be carefully considered and realistic.

Part 2: Updated Gantt Chart

You will use Microsoft Project to update the supporting project Gantt chart begun in your previous course project deliverable.

  • You are not creating a new Gantt chart, only updating the one you created in the previous assignment.

Note:

  • You are to create or assume all necessary assumptions to successfully complete this assignment.
  • You must submit both parts as separate files to the assignment area. Label each file name according to the appropriate part.

Instructions

Part 1: Business Requirements

Using the Business Requirements Template, you are to write a 5–7-page business requirements document for your hypothetical e-commerce company in which you:

  1. Describe the functional business requirements (scope) and scope control.
  2. Describe non-functional business requirements, such as governance, risk, and compliance.
  3. Describe technical requirements to integrate various e-commerce infrastructure components.
  4. Identify potential risks, constraints, and assumptions.
  5. Use three sources to support your writing.
    • Choose sources that are credible, relevant, and appropriate.
    • Cite each source listed on your source page at least one time within your assignment.
    • Access the library or review library guides for help with research, writing, and citation.

Part 2: Updated Gantt Chart

Use Microsoft Project to update the previously created Gantt chart with the major and minor tasks identified in the business requirements document

Theories of Personality Start

Writing Assignment #7: Theories of Personality Start Assignment

The vast majority of personality theories make the argument that personality, by definition, is a stable characteristic that is enduring and changes very little across the lifetime, particularly for those who are in the age of young adulthood. But is personality really as stable as theories argue? For this assignment, re-examine some of the personality theories presented within the textbook (or outside the textbook from a peer-reviewed source) and provide an argument that personality may actually change after an individual reaches adulthood. Is there a common theme about the behaviors that may change with age according to the different theories to studying personality (e.g., trait, life narrative, etc.)? Or is there no consensus? There are no right or wrong answers, but do your best to provide a cogent argument that personality may not be a dispositional characteristic. Be sure to summarize specific theories presented in the chapter to support your argument.

metadiscourse to explain your letter’s goals from start to finish in a mission statement.

Write a letter in which you urge your readers to take action on a civic issue. You decide on the

issue. (Civic issues can include such topics as voting, exercise, diet, finances, safety, etc. Begin

with a topic and narrow it down to an argument.

Use metadiscourse to explain your letter’s goals from start to finish in a mission statement. Make

it clear who your authority figure/audience is (editor of a newspaper, state senator, city council

member, school board official, etc.) and the specific genre and setting (via the mail, the press,

etc.) in which you are delivering your argument. Also indicate your purpose for writing this

letter.

Provide context by discussing the issue that you are concerned about and by synthesizing the

different perspectives on this issue that you have researched by reading sources or by talking to

others who are also concerned. (Consult at least two sources, which can be formal written texts

or interviews.)

Using a blend of appropriate rhetorical appeals (ethos for credibility and character, pathos for

emotions, logos for logic) and strategies (tone, diction, organization of argument, etc.), make an

argument (a main claim with three points/sub-claims) that urges your audience to take action on

this issue.

Conclude by warning your readers to do something as soon as possible. Restate your three sub-

claims in the same order in which you stated them before. Include your name with credentials to

reinforce your credibility.

Cite your sources in a separate page.

How to Structure This Project:

Greet your specific readers (Dear ___,)

Introduction: Use metadiscourse to explain your project’s goals from start to finish in a mission

statement paragraph.

Establish your credibility at the onset of your letter so that readers will listen to you and trust that

you know your subject and have done your research. Give some indication of the genre, setting,

and purpose of your letter.

Provide a paragraph or two of context by discussing this issue that you are concerned about and

by synthesizing the different perspectives on this issue that you have researched.

Make an argument with three points, in three paragraphs, using a blend of appropriate rhetorical

appeals and strategies to influence your particular readers. Urge your audience to take action on

this issue. Use the info you researched in sources to reinforce your position. If you consider an

opposing viewpoint, acknowledge it briefly, but then refute it and maintain your own position.

Make sure that the three sub-claims are clearly indicated in your topic sentences near the

beginning of your body paragraphs. Use metadiscourse to guide readers through your argument.

Conclusion: Convince your readers to so something as soon as possible. Restate your three sub-

claims in the same order in which you stated them before.

Close your letter with an adverb (sincerely, respectfully, etc.) and your name with your

credentials (job title, years of experience, years at your residence, etc.).

Include an additional page, separate from the letter, with information about sources that you

researched and used for this project.

Criteria for Evaluation (How You Are Graded)

Successful writers will

1. Answer all parts of the prompt.

2. Write a cohesive and well edited letter.

3. Upload their rough draft and final draft to Turn It In before the deadline.

4. Complete 3-5 pages (format: single spaced with extra spaces after the greeting, between

the paragraphs, and before the closing).

Tips for Writing the Civic Letter

There should be only one argument (main claim) for this project.

The argument should be specific and clear (not a broad, general topic).

The argument should have three sub-claims (three points that pertain to that argument).

You must support your argument and its sub-claims with all three rhetorical appeals and some

rhetorical strategies of your choice.

(There’s no need to write the words ethos, pathos, logos; just incorporate the following three

rhetorical appeals: credibility and character, emotion, and logic, into your letter in order to

engage your readers.)

Rhetorical appeals:

Ethos: In your first or second paragraph introduce yourself with credentials so that you can be

trusted. Incorporate your credibility into your letter at key points to establish your character and

be persuasive.

Pathos: Try to engage your readers’ emotions at certain points in your letter.

Logos: Use hard evidence (data, statistics, etc.) as logic to convince your readers to do

something.

Examples of an argument:

You should support ___.

We need funding for ___, so you should help us.

You should vote in favor of (or against) ___.

Examples of sub-claims:

Doing so would result in the following three benefits: 1…, 2…, 3…

Not doing so would have the following negative consequences: 1…, 2…, 3…

Evidence:

Support each sub-claim with evidence that you researched (interviews with fellow concerned

citizens, print sources, etc.).

Use really clear language (metadiscourse) to guide your readers through your points so that they

don’t get bogged down in your evidence. Place that metadiscourse at the start of each paragraph,

incorporated into your topic sentences, so readers can follow your train of thought.

Examples of metadiscourse:

In this letter I will…

My first point is…

My second point is…

My third point is…

To recap…

Watch my lecture for help.

Read the sample student civic letters for help.

Look for the following in the students’ civic letters: the argument; the three sub-claims; the three

rhetorical appeals, the strategies, and the evidence used to support the argument and its three

sub-claims; and the metadiscourse.

See how the writer clarifies the purpose for writing this letter.

Notice the specific audience (authority figure) that the writer is appealing to and how the writer

tailors this letter to that specific reader

Develop a comprehensive Marketing Plan for a business start-up approved

Assignment details

Develop a comprehensive Marketing Plan for a business start-up approved by the instructor during Unit 1 of the course.

The Group Marketing Plan assignment will require research into this type of business in order to identify potential market segments and their characteristics, select appropriate target markets, design a marketing mix that will optimize the profitability of the business, set targets and evaluation metrics, and develop a full implementation plan. Students should use resources from the optional reading list to guide them in the development and preparation of the Plan.

This plan will be presented to the Executive Committee of the company. Click on the following link to see the Marketing Plan Outline for the correct format that is used when creating a Marketing plan.

The written submission should be substantive, both in length (maximum 30 pages, double-spaced, 12 pt font) and content, directly and thoughtfully addressing the question or issue. Use APA format.

The report should be professional. The Product (the content, the presentation, etc.), Place (the manner in which it is presented to the professor), Price (the amount of effort required to read and consider the points – this is a place where clarity, conciseness and attention to grammar, and spelling and punctuation counts), and Promotion (how well your ideas are supported and whether to “sell” your position) work together as the professor evaluates your work.

Start by identifying all the annotation features deployed, listing them under the headers of either project or chart annotation

Select any example of a visualization or infographic, maybe your own work or that of others. The task is to undertake a deep, detailed ‘forensic’ like assessment of the design choices made across each of the five layers of the chosen visualization’s anatomy. In each case your assessment is only concerned with one design layer at a time. For this task, take a close look at the annotation choices:
Label each of the 4 sections in your document

  1. Start by identifying all the annotation features deployed, listing them under the headers of either project or chart annotation
  2. How suitable are the choices and deployment of these annotation features? If they are not, what do you think they should have been?
  3. Go through the set of ‘Influencing factors’ from the latter section of the book’s chapter to help shape your assessment and to possibly inform how you might tackle this design layer differently
  4. Also, considering the range of potential annotation features, what would you do differently or additionally?

Submit a two-page document answering all of the questions above.  Be sure to show the visualization first and then thoroughly answer the above questions. Ensure that there are at least two-peer reviewed sources utilized this week to support your work.

Your business idea is as follows:
• You want to start up a tour business that caters for MAMILs (Middle Aged Men In Lycra – Cyclists)
• The idea is that, for a fee, you will arrange cycling tours in desirable (bucket list) locations, e.g.
o Tour of Tasmania in warmer months o In the more temperate months offer tours of wine regions such as Barossa and Clare Valleys in SA, or Margaret River Region in WA or Hunter Valley and surrounds in NSW
o Tropical tours in the colder months e.g. the Daintree and Port Douglas region, etc.
• The tours will accommodate approx. 20-30 cyclists at a time and will be fully supported by your team of tour coordinators and tour support teams.
• You will market to MAMILs in your own capital city
• You will equip a six metre (20ft) shipping container to safely and securely transport their bicycles and equipment to the starting point for each tour and return everything to a central point back in their capital city at the end of the tour.

• The duration of the tours will range from 7-14 days
• Preliminary research on your part indicates that MAMILs would be prepared to pay in the range of $3-5K each for a tour.
• The model that your tours will follow is;
o The MAMILs pay their own travel costs to get to the start point of the tour and their return home at the completion of the tour.
o Your tour team will provide a support vehicle to travel with the herd each day of the tour.
o The tours will range from budget tours where the herd will stay overnight in camping and caravan parks along the way, through to more up-market tours where they will stay in hotel and or B&B style accommodation. o For the budget tours you propose that your support vehicle provides a BBQ breakfast and evening meal at the camps.
The way you want to set up this new business is to develop a single but successful operation that services MAMILs in your capital city. When you have the model running successfully you plan to franchise operations nationally and potentially internationally. Your goal is that in five years’ time you will be managing a group of franchises and have both a good income as well as a good work/life balance.
Instructions
For Part 1 of this project you will need to read the information below and address the following points. It is recommended you conduct some external research to help you create a well-considered plan. These tasks will need to be completed and submitted in a professional, word processed, format.
Task 1

  1. Conduct a SWOT (strength, weakness, opportunities and threats) analysis on this proposal
  2. Following the SWOT analysis decide on the viability of the proposed business and decide on a “Go” or “No-go” for developing this business
  3. Assuming a “Go”, now you (or your team) need to agree on a business name
  4. Now develop a Mission Statement for the business
  5. Create your Vision Statement and develop a draft Values Statement
  6. Now consider the operations and develop a preliminary Organisation Chart, indicating the functional units of the business
  7. Select one functional Unit and develop a draft Management Plan that describes how the Unit will be managed.
  8. List 2 Key Result Areas (KRAs) for the Unit/Team

As many have noted, the pandemic did not start this trend but it was a catalyst that forced many industries to mainstream virtual teams

As many have noted, the pandemic did not start this trend but it was a catalyst that forced many industries to mainstream virtual teams. Now weighing the positives and negatives many are not going back to pure face to face. At the least, they are moving to hybrid teams dynamic for the foreseeable future. Motivations are many and range from cost savings on travel and commercial office space to cut commute time, environmental impact, and spending time with family.

Key dynamics often overlooked in virtual teams is building relationships. In those interpersonal communications, both in the team and individually, show appreciation (Roberts, 2012). As team members are challenged and struggle, a virtual team leader who has relationships with their staff can show empathy, which bonds virtual teams together. The process of building relationships is more difficult virtually, but there are a series of techniques for doing this. Some take several days in the team forming stage to focus on team-building activities. Software virtual team leads during CVD would do their daily stand-ups, then schedule virtual coffee breaks during the day. Another creative team leader had her team cook a meal together or do another activity. Another team leader made a point of being highly aware, empathetic, and supportive during the pandemic. She knew that results would come from her highly competent staff if they could stay focused. Another dynamic is to have virtual teams focus on process (Roberts, 2012). As virtual teams work with less immediate oversight an increased attention to process benchmarks can keep them satisfied as they are geographically independent.

In my field, education and leadership coaching, virtual teams are nothing new in the corporate learning and development arena. Training is often most effective face to face in groups with follow up coaching of implementation and turning knowledge into skills. People tend to be more engaged face to face as the distractions of multi-tasking are reduced. Perhaps the biggest emerging trends in education are taking place in intermediate and secondary education. The pandemic has accelerated rapid innovation in Microsoft Teams for education, expanded Google classrooms, and thousands more apps and sites for content. Thousands of teachers are now making instructional videos for virtual teaching online, making virtual classrooms more interactive. For example, using MS Note with Teams, teachers are now able to review students writing as they are doing it and provide live oral input over Teams.

Engagement online of virtual teams is hard. Some companies have alienated employees by reducing salaries for people working remotely. This triggers people to seek new employment immediately. As stated above, rallying people around a shared purpose for task motivation and bonding them via relationships for interpersonal engagement is valuable. For building our virtual team at the beginning of last year, we met for two weeks face to face, then weekly as a team, and one on one with various tasks constantly across the year. This worked pretty well, but each of us made the extra effort to be relational and take an interest in each other’s personal concerns which were rampant across the CVD year, and look for ways to support each other.
