A culture is a system of beliefs, languages, values, behaviors and the human-made part of the physical environment. Culture varies from one group to another and can exert a strong influence on the adolescent development. Through these cultural variations, the tanner staging varies from one culture to another. According to (McDowell, Brody, & Hughes, 2007), the different components of culture interact with one another, for example, the interaction of societal systems and cultural values impacts on the adolescent developments among the individuals through mediating effects of the proximal social contexts like peers and family. The author further asserts that although the puberty is a biological phenomenon that is “wired” to human body, research has shown that its onset can be influenced by cultural variations. For instance, there is a variation of menarche timing across various cultures. For example, the menarche age is 12 years among the Caracas of Venezuela and 18 years among the Bundi highlands in Guinea.
