Groups and Their Relative Propensity to Involvement in Crime

Growing within one’s local community provides an opportunity to develop relationships with family members and neighbors. This is true in community settings where one gets to go to local schools within the reach of the family members. However, there is another added element of developing social bonds with the other children during school hours. In my time during high school, I had an opportunity to develop and enhance relationships with different students from different races. Although I developed close relationships with others, other relationships were strictly academic. The main reason for these differences in the kinds of relationships that I developed was the clash in individual values, beliefs, and norms. As I grew I had an opportunity to learn about different behaviors among the different groups of students. Some later became closer and turned to be helpful, while others turned out delinquent and eventually turning into criminal activities.  Such group behaviors can be explained through the differential association theory.

Social learning theories have become popular in criminology is developing an understanding of crime and criminal tendencies. Walters (2020) asserts that the differential association theory is one of the basic premises behind the social learning theories. The author points out that youth learn the attitudes and criminal techniques from the individuals they associate with. The influences of association on enhancing criminal tendencies among individuals have also been examined extensively. In their study, Harris et al. (2017) showed that inmates who were kept with more experienced criminals tend to develop increased criminal tendencies once out of prison. The authors indicate that the differential association theory serves to show that association determines the nature of trajectory that a delinquent individual can assume in their life. This is consistent with what I observed during my high school, where the friends who associated with students with delinquent behavior later turned into criminal activities.             Boonstoppel and Thompson (2017) points out that the differential association theory considers crime as a learned behavior. According to the authors, individuals acquire their values and definitions of their groups through intense, frequent, and regular interactions. My high school experience allowed me to observe how individuals and groups interacted. I developed associations with students whom I felt had better morals and great work ethics. This later determined who I wanted to be and what I am today. The groups that I avoided included those who showed truancy and other disciplinary issues. Just as outlined in differential association theory, the associations that were developed by the different groups yielded different personalities. A majority of those who developed

Presentation on Reach Conducted by Dr. Kathleen Vohs of the University of Minnesota

The brief outlines that women are objectified in advertisements and this is shown in the differences between the perceived cheap and expensive products. In research on women objectification done by Dr. Kathleen Vohs of the University of Minnesota and published in Journal of Psychological Science shows that women are more comfortable in sexual imagery in advertisements of luxury products than with cheap products (TIME, 2013). In a research on 47 women on advertisements for watches prized randomly shows that women associated with more expensive products were less emotionally upset than when associated with cheaper products. However, no difference in attitudes towards products was found among men. Researchers in psychology have found that the experience of one growing as a woman may evolve being treated as object to be evaluated. According to (Bailey, Lamarch, Gammage & Sullivan, 2016; Rollero & De Piccoli, 2017) self-objectification occurs when people treat themselves as objects to be evaluated by other people in the society. Rollero & De Piccoli asserts that in western societies, there is social construction of female body……………………………………………………………………………………………………

Comparison and Contrast of McGregor’s Theory X and Theory Y

In 1960, Douglas McGregor reiterated the need for an understanding of the relation between behavior and motivation. He classified manager attitudes into two extremes termed Theory X and Theory Y. According to (Montana & Charnov, 2008) through his theories, McGregor believed that organization managers could motivate their employees through either Theory X or Theory Y. In his Theory X, which he termed as a traditional approach, McGregor asserted that in order for managers to motivate their employees, then they must threaten, coerce or control them. His alternative theory is the Theory Y, which suggests that people have the abilities to be responsible. The two theories have similarities and differences that make their applications distinct within organizations.

The major similarity between Theories X and Y is based on their building principle that is based on motivation of employees. Theory X and Y were created based on the assumptions that manager had the ability to manipulate employee behavior through different motivational strategies regarded as theories X or Y. However, the major differences between the two theories occur with regards to the approach of managerial motivation of employees.             According to Theory X, it is assumed that employees dislike work and tend to avoid responsibilities, and as such they must be coerced for them to work hard. In contrast, Theory Y is based on the assumption that most employees can self-direct owing to the fact that they like work and seek for responsibilities (Leonard & Trusty, 2015………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….CLICK HERE TO ORDER THIS PAPER………………………NO PLAGIARISMGet 100% Original papers from the writing experts

Deontological or utilitarian theory

Overview
In the Week One Assignment, you formulated a concrete ethical question, took a position on that topic, and identified a reason supporting and a reason opposing that position. In the Week Three Assignment, you discussed either deontological or utilitarian theory, applied that theory to the question, and raised a relevant objection.

By engaging with the course material, you now have had a chance to refine your thinking and broaden your understanding of the problem by approaching it from the perspective of multiple ethical theories.

In this paper, you will demonstrate what you have learned by writing an essay in which you

Present a revised formulation of the ethical question and introduction to the topic.
Explain the kind of reasoning you think is the best way to approach this question, and how that reasoning supports the position you think is strongest.
Raise an objection, and be able to respond to it.

Instructions
Write an essay that conforms to the requirements below. The paper must be 1500 to 2000 words in length (excluding the title and reference pages) and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site..

The paragraphs of your essay should conform to the following guidelines:

Introduction
Your first paragraph should begin with the topic question, suitably revised. It should be focused, concrete, and on a relevant moral problem. You should then introduce the topic in the way described by the Week One instructions, but reflecting the developed understanding and information you have gained about the topic and any necessary refinement of the scope.

Follow this with a thesis statement that states your position, and a brief description of the primary reason(s) supporting your position. (See the handout on thesis statements provided). Finally, provide a brief preview of the overall aim and procedure of your paper.

Explanation and Demonstration of Moral Reasoning
This section of the Final Paper will explain and demonstrate what you believe to be the best way of reasoning about the question you have chosen, and showing how that reasoning supports the position you have taken on the question. You might explain the principles, rules, values, virtues, conceptions of purposes and ends, and other general ideas that you find persuasive, and show how they support concrete judgments.

In the course of doing so, you must make reference to at least two of the approaches that we have examined in the course (such as deontological, utilitarian, or virtue-based), and utilize at least one resource off the provided list for each of the two approaches. One of these theories may be the theory you discussed in your Week Three Assignment, but your discussion here should be more refined.

For example, you might find the reasoning associated with Aristotelian virtue ethics to be the most compelling, and reference Aristotle in the process of showing how that reasoning supports a certain conclusion. In the course of this, you could contrast that with a utilitarian approach, referencing Mill for instance.

Objection and Response
After explaining the ethical reasoning that supports your position, you should raise an objection and respond to it. An objection articulates a plausible reason why someone might find the argument weak or problematic. You should explain how it brings out this weakness, and do so in a way that would be acceptable to someone who disagrees with your own argument. Then, provide the best response you can to the objection, showing how it does not undermine your position. Your response should not simply restate your original position or argument, but should say something new in support of it.

Conclusion
Provide a conclusion that sums up what you presented in the paper and offers some final reflections.

Resource Requirement
You must use at least four scholarly resources. Two of the resources must be drawn from the list of acceptable primary resources on each of the two theories you discuss. For example, if you discuss deontology and virtue ethics, you would need at least one resource under the “Deontology” list and at least one resource under the “Virtue Ethics” list. The other two may be from either the Required or Recommended Resources, or scholarly resources found in the Ashford University Library.

The textbook may be cited, but it does not count toward the resource requirement. If you cite the textbook, you will still need to cite at least four more sources that fulfill the requirements stated above.
If you need help with finding additional resources, or are unsure about whether a particular resource will count toward the requirement, please contact your instructor.
For sources to count toward the resources requirement, they must be cited within the text of your paper and on the reference page.

Introduction

Should voluntary euthanasia be allowed among the terminally ill patients? There is still a huge disagreement and heated debates between the experts, political class and the general public regarding the issue of voluntary euthanasia. The practice of active voluntary euthanasia is legal in Belgium and the Netherlands, while the practice is legal in Oregon and Washington, in the United States of America (Lo, 2013). The proponents of voluntary euthanasia have often cited the need to help the patients to die peacefully, while those opposed to the issue cite sanctity of life (humans being different from other animals) among other moral grounds. Patients who suffer from terminal illnesses such as cancer, heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, face a lot of pain and their families undergo a lot of psychological turmoil and financial stresses. Allowing voluntary euthanasia among terminally ill patients will help them to die peacefully, alleviating them of pain and their families of the psychological agony.

The proposition that the paper undertakes regarding the use of voluntary euthanasia must be done in consideration of the perspectives of the patient and those close to them. The paper therefore seeks to sufficiently provide the arguments for voluntary euthanasia, while relating the same to the perspective of the utilitarian and deontological theories to provide an explanation and moral reasoning. Moreover, the paper will also seek to evaluate an objection to the position taken, providing an explanation and response to the objection.

Explanation and Demonstration of Moral Reasoning             One of the principal moral reasons that

When looking at profit from this theory’s perspective, the idea is that profits will help empower and sustain the community as a whole. Profits are more than just a benefit for shareholders.

The concept behind the triple bottom line is that companies are responsible to all their stakeholders. This includes everyone involved with the company, whether directly or indirectly. It also includes the planet on which we all live. This approach views shareholders as very important stakeholders. This approach also recognizes the need for companies to consider other important stakeholders in the company, including employees, customers, vendors, and the larger community.

Before writing this week’s discussion posting, review this MindTools article, “The Triple Bottom Line: Measuring Your Organization’s Wider Impact,” for more details on the triple bottom line.

This Week’s Discussion Post

For this week’s discussion, please respond to the following:

How would you implement the triple bottom line (people, planet, profit) concept at your chosen company, whether you are using the snack food company scenario or the company of your choice?

Keep the following format in mind as you complete this week’s discussion:

  • Profit: When looking at profit from this theory’s perspective, the idea is that profits will help empower and sustain the community as a whole. Profits are more than just a benefit for shareholders. Briefly explain your approach.
  • People: Describe your approach to caring about suppliers, customers, employees, and the community. For example, one way to care about employees is to provide a good working environment, training and development opportunities, and health care.
  • Planet: Explain your approach to minimizing your company’s impact on the environment. For example, your company might develop a process to minimize waste or reduce energy usage, such as using recycled materials in its production process.

Post at least one substantive comment to another student’s post.

Notes

  • Textbook Chapter 14, “Social Responsibility & Sustainability,” pages 259–270, provides additional detail on this topic.
