Egypt, for more than 2000 years was known to be a very rich country with most civilized lands in regards to the ancient world. Much that has been gathered about this country history and its great civilization has been learnt through their great arts and architecture. Specifically, the existence of the ruins of tombs, pyramids and many temples provides valuable information in regards to the country’ culture and life. The ancient people in Egypt made art and different forms of architectures that explains their existence and the condition of the country during that time. This essay will focus on the ancient art and architecture in Egypt and how it has contributed the country’s ancient and valuable culture.
Art and architecture in Egypt explains how Egyptians were extremely religious people. They believed in life after death, which contributes much on their way of ancient culture. In their belief of life after death, Egyptians believed that in order for the spirit of a dead person to move and live on in the next life, their body had to be carefully preserved or either mummified (Smithand Simpson, 1998). Additionally, they also buried the dead together with their possession such as foods and utensils another way of preserving the dead and allow their spirit to live on in the other life. Depending on a person status in the society it determines the kind of possessions to be buried with as well as the best method of preservations. For example, the tombs were built for Kings and the royal families where they were carefully preserved. The existence of the ruins of the tombs signifies Egyptians ancient culture of life after death and how they preserved dead people in order to make their spirit at peace and allow them to live in the other life(Smith and Simpson, 1998). Furthermore, these ruins of the tombs consist of sculptures and wall paintings, where Ancient Egyptians believed that the sculptures and the wall paintings were to be used in the afterlife by the deceased.
The below picture is a tomb wall painting of great queen Nefertari. She was the wife of Pharaoh Rameses II and the painting was painted in her tomb so that she could use it in the afterlife (Dodson and Hilton, 2004).
Egypt religion was based on belief of different gods that represented different type of blessings and situation in the country. For example, there was god of love, god of sun among others. Their religious believes were based on these gods and they prayed them seeking blessings and prosperity (Hill, 2007). Nevertheless, these gods needed proper care in terms of where to live among other necessities. Egyptians build temples with stables, staffs of attendants, great palaces, orchards as well as farmlands. These temples represented the home for the gods. Additionally, Egyptians over time they made sculptures that represented the physical status of the different gods.
