Ancient learning theories: Behaviorism and social learning theory

Introduction

Behaviorism and the social learning theory are generally two psychological behavioral theories that are utilized in explaining behavior. Nevertheless, the two are involved in dealing with behavior; somehow they emphasis on diverse elements in their quest to elucidate the way people behave. They two have strong bases of support to the extent that no clear answer to the one that explains behavior well that the others. Behaviorism is usually the theory that tries to explain why people behave in a specific manner, and it focusses on observable features. In the eye of a behaviorist, they think that behavior can be sketched back to peripheralstimuli. Moreover, behavioral theorists have a conviction that behavior can be reinforced as well as it can be punished. Reinforcements are mostly the stimuli which are designed such that they encourage behavior to repeat.

On the other hand, punishments are designed for putting a stop to a particular behavior. The behaviorism theory can be outlined back to ancient behaviorists like John B. Watson and B.F Skinner where they tried to move the emphasis of psychology to culminate to observable and measurable features (Akers, 2017). The driving force in dealing with this topic is my desire to pursue a career in counseling psychology as I like giving people advice in the various phases of their lives and I study their behavior in formulating their care plan and encouraging them to take life positively.

Social Learning

This is a psychological theory that expands the knowledge that is found in the behavioral theory. It tries to explain the reason people act in the manner they behave. However, social learning enumerates that conduct is founded on anamalgamation of noticeable stimuli coupled with inner processes. Social learning entails that three necessities are needed for an individual to learn a particular behavior that is retention, motivation, and reproduction(Miner, 2015). Retention can be defined as the act of a person’s ability to remember a specific behavior which they have observed. Reproduction, on the other hand, is the ability of an individual to reproduce the retained behavior while motivation is the person’s desire to participate in a specific behavior (Miner, 2015).

Behaviorism versus Social Learning

Social learning usually adds so many internal thoughts processes to particular behaviors which the behaviorism theory fails to add. Even though there are differences there are many similarities between them, the social learning theorists suggest that behavior is usually involved complicated stimuli and responses, they entail that in addition to behaviorism external reinforcements, people typically learn through observation and they also imitate the behavior of the people that are existing around their vicinity(Akers, 2017). This brings about the issues of peer pressure which can cause a person to move along the crowd in an ultimate desire to fit and be accepted. This is regardless of whether the observed behavior conflicts with individual values(Greene, 2017).

Applications of Behaviorism and Social Learning Theories

Both of these theories have extensive applications in society and everyday living. Parents that engage their kids in carrying out duties and chores at home usually are utilizing the behavior modification process of behaviorism(Miner, 2015). In the same breath, those parents that shun from smoking in the presence of their children as this is unhealthy behavior as they do not want their children to follow suit are using the social learning theory. This supports the proactive education program where they consist of elements that bring to therefore social learning as well as behaviorism(Akers, 2017). Many examples constitute an application of both of these theories like campaigns to stop underage drinking; in t……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

Research Question:Is vaping a safe alternative to traditional cigarettes?

Title:

Whether vaping is a safe alternative to traditional cigarettes

Introduction

Many people who wish to quit smoking cigarettes believe that vaping is the best choice. Cigarettes are known to be a crucial factor in affecting a person’s health. Not only cigarettes can directly affect the person smoking but also can affect others. Therefore, changing to vaping will not stop the addictive cycle of smoking. Even though, vaping appears to be a valid alternative to smoking cigarettes, it still has chemicals with tabaco products that can be harmful to one’s health(Mumford, et al., 2019). However, people have different opinions and beliefs when it comes to vaping and smoking cigarettes, since many believe that vaping should be the first step to stop smoking. As we know, people who smoke cigarettes outdoors are essentially exposing others to secondhand smoking, as well. Then, how about people who vape? Do they also expose others to the chemicals in the vape product?

Vaping is largely being marketed as a safe alternative to traditional cigarettes. The electronic cigarettes used in vaping come in various forms which include: vape mods, Juuls, and vape pens. Vaping involves the use of battery-operated devices with products that contain nicotine(Arnold, 2014). This is an addictive drug that stimulates, relaxes and is a component of tobacco. Nicotine is the main substance that makes vaping and smoking so addictive. The electronic devices enable nicotine to be inhaled through heating a liquid cartridge that contains nicotine, and other chemicals into vapor. Since vaping devices operate by heating a liquid instead of tobacco, the vapor realized and inhaled is considered smokeless and this is why vaping is considered “safer” than smoking. This paper aims to analyze whether vaping is safer than smoking by comparing the contents of both and the effects these products have on human health.

Discussion

Vaping is believed to be a good alternative to smoking for those who want to quit. Many people believe that vaping helps to stop smoking cigarettes since it is a nicotine liquid being evaporated making smoke. But the question is if vaping is any safer than cigarettes?  Does it cause the same addiction? How about the individual health? Is it affected? According to Wang, et al., (2018)“A major barrier to quitting smoking is the addictiveness of nicotine, which is compounded by cigarette engineering that maximizes the addictive potential of delivered nicotine”. Therefore, people who wish to stop smoking cigarettes may have difficulty when changing to vaping because the smoking addiction is still present. The habit of smoking may make it more difficult for the individual to completely quit it. Why people would choose the vaping route to help quit smoking rather than other routes such as nicotine patches, gum, etc.? In addition, there are links between vaping and lungs performance which can be decreased overtime as well as the chemical can cause irritation of the airways(Wang, et al., 2018). Therefore, either smoking cigarettes or vaping can be detrimental to one’s health.

Both Vaping products and traditional cigarettes contain harmful chemicals. One of the key differences between traditional smoking and e-cigarettes is that traditional cigarettes do not contain tobacco. However, tobacco is not the only harmful substance in smoking that causes cancer. Traditional cigarettes contain many chemicals that have been proved to be harmful and e-cigarettes contain these same chemicals(Fairchild, et al., 2019). In 2009, the FDA stated that e-cigarettes contain certain levels of carcinogens and other toxic chemicals that the users can be exposed to. For instance, in the e-cigarette cartridges which are largely marketed as tobacco-free, the FDA reported a detection of a toxic compound in antifreeze and other tobacco compounds that have been proved to cancer in humans(Wackowski, et al., 2016). Tobacco-specific impurities found in the e-cigarettes are known to cause other health-related issues for the users. This proves that vapor is just as dangerous as traditional smoking because it brings about health complications. Another issue is how to protect people who do not vape or smoke cigarettes at all from the contents of the nicotine? Often, one will see people vaping on the streets, instead of smoking cigarettes because t…………………………………………………………………………………………………

Traditional experimental research dictates that there must be one or more experimental groups

Traditional experimental research dictates that there must be one or more experimental groups (groups receiving a treatment or intervention) and a control group (which does not receive the intervention). Participants are assigned randomly to the experimental and control groups. Although experimental designs may be preferable to other designs, even in action research, they are not always feasible for practitioners for many reasons. There may be ethical issues regarding withholding an intervention from a client group; or time, financial, or logistical constraints may make it impossible to include random assignment into groups.

In such cases, the use of time-series research can provide a meaningful alternative to true experimental research. Time-series designs are quasi-experimental, meaning that they still seek to evaluate the impact of a treatment or intervention on a target group (or individual) but do not include random assignment to treatment and control groups. Researchers still have control over admittance criteria to the treatment group (e.g., mothers under the age of 21). Times series then allows researchers to take measurements of treatment effectiveness at various intervals over time. Taken together, these data points provide information about the intervention under consideration.

In this Assignment, you apply time-series research techniques to a case study.

To Prepare

Imagine that you are a human and social services professional working with a child, Kaya, who is having some behavioral problems at her elementary school. As a scholar practitioner, you approach your work with her from an empirical standpoint and want to measure the effectiveness of your recommended services. To date, you have provided information about resources to the family and coordinated services for the child and family.

As such, you pose the following research question: “What impact do the services the child is currently receiving have on reducing off-task behavior, physical aggression, and verbal aggression for the identified child?”

For the purposes of this research, the target behaviors are as follows:

  1. Off-task: failure to maintain eye contact with task at hand for more than 3 consecutive seconds
  2. Physical Aggression: hitting/pushing/kicking peers/teachers, throwing objects
  3. Verbal Aggression: threatening, yelling

Consider the following observation report:

During the first observation period, which was conducted on Monday (in math class) between 11:20 and 11:30, 10-minute, 10-second, partial interval recording was used to assess the frequency of off-task behaviors, physical aggression, and verbal aggression. Kaya was observed to be off-task during 12% of the intervals observed, engaged in physical aggression 0% of the intervals observed, and engaged in verbal aggression 2% of the intervals observed.

During the second observation (during recess), which was conducted on Wednesday from 9:00 to 9:30, Kaya was observed to be off-task during 15% of the intervals observed, engaged in physical aggression 20% of the intervals observed, and engaged in verbal aggression 3% of the intervals observed.

Kaya was also observed on Friday from 10:30 to 10:40 during a group activity. Kaya was observed to be off-task during 20% of the intervals observed, was observed to engage in physical aggression 7% of the intervals observed, and was observed to engage in verbal aggression 10% of the intervals observed.

Off-task                                Physical Aggression                                  Verbal Aggression

12%                                         0%                                                                   2%

15%                                        20%                                                                  3%

20%                                        7%                                                                    10%

The Assignment (1–2 pages)

Based on the data, you determine that you must design a behavioral intervention for Kaya and determine if it is successful. As you begin the process of investigating your research question:

  • Briefly describe a time-series design that you would use to investigate the impact of your intervention, and explain how you would collect and record the additional data. Be specific.
  • Select a method for graphically representing the provided data. Use the method to create a graph. (You can use Microsoft Excel or Word).
  • Analyze the data and provide a narrative description of your analysis.

Conducting Time-Series Research Babbie (2011) illustrates time-series designs as a research design that involves measurement taken over time (p. 397). Another definition given by Senter (n.d.) expresses that time-series is a collection of quantitative observations that are evenly spaced in time and measured successively. Time-series research design has many applications and there are two central goals of any such study. The initial objective is the identification of the nature of a specific correlation or phenomenon must occur, by analyzing occurrences of observations as sequences. The next objective is that forecasting can be accomplished by examining the patterns to predict future time-series variable values. Senter (n.d.) explains that the goals of time-series analysis are (i) descriptive: identify patterns in correlated data trends and seasonal variation
