Assignment Content

  1. Competency
    This competency will allow you to demonstrate your understanding of prominent sociological theories and how they impact the digital world.

    Student Success Criteria
    View the grading rubric for this deliverable by selecting the “This item is graded with a rubric” link, which is located in the Details & Information pane.

    Instructions
    You are working for a local department store in the Operations Department. You notice that their business practices and use of technology are not up to date. The Human Resources Department does not have adequate computer access and often requires employees to complete some business at home. They also require prospective employees to apply from home. You recognize that not all people have personal computers, and some might be accessing business and personal records from a public computer. There are two prominent sociological theories that can be used to easily examine computer usage for individuals and organizations. Those theories are Conflict Theory and Symbolic Interaction Theory.

    At a staff meeting, you and your team are engaged in a discussion about the use of technology on both an individual and organizational level. You cite the digital divide as a major concern. Your store is considering an upgrade in some or all of their technological resources.

    Recognizing that you are technologically savvy, your supervisor asks you to generate a visual comparison that considers the use of public computers versus a personal computer. You will rank concepts such as ease of use, time, and comfort in completing tasks, security factors, email management, and safety in conducting business that is typically completed on a computer that may lead someone to experience the digital divide (a difference between groups of people and their use of digital technology). You will also need to consider the sociological theories named above and explain how from a sociological perspective, it would benefit or hinder the store you work in to upgrade their technology.

    Your comparison should consider various factors identified below and will illustrate the benefits and some potential limitations of utilizing technology. Your presentation will be presented to your supervisor and other members of the Operations Department in order to determine which, if any, components of the store’s current technological operations will be updated. The visual comparison can be in any engaging format that you select.

    For this comparison chart, you are to reflect upon and address the following sets of questions/information.
    • Define conflict theory.
    • Define symbolic interaction theory.
    • Discuss how each of these theories would explain the use of technology and the development of the digital world we now live.
    • Consider multiple ways that society has changed in the past several decades and what contributed to that change.
    • Provide examples of technological growth and change over the past several decades.
    • Make direct correlations between the technologies that exist and the changes that have occurred at the organizational and societal levels in the past several decades.
    • Define digital divide.
    • Consider factors that create the digital divide, such as access to technology, socioeconomic status, age, personal interest, location of residence, etc.
    • Based upon factors that cause the digital divide, suggest ways that this divide can be combated.
    • How does the digital divide apply to the store that you work in for this scenario?
    • Which theoretical perspective can best be applied to your store in the above scenario to help explain and counter the impacts of the digital divide?

understanding and knowledge of enterprise systems principles

Assignment 1: Industry Analysis and Report
Submission: Please submit this assignment to provided links in Canvas
Type: Individual
Value: 30% of the total mark
Word Limit 2500 ± 10% words (excluding references)
Aim:
The assignment is designed to demonstrate your:
• understanding and knowledge of enterprise systems principles
• understanding of issues that contribute to current debates in enterprise systems
• use of analytical skills in reviewing academic and practitioners’ sources
• ability to draw meaningful conclusions from your research
Industry Research and Analysis
Read the following case study about the Southern Cross Travel Agency (SCTA) company.
You are required to:

  1. Analyse the case study, identify the problems and opportunities for the company in the case study and create a needs assessment.
  2. Market Assessment: Critically review some possible and suitable Cloud ERP solutions. Collect data about different Cloud ERP vendors (8-10) that you believe could be suitable for the company in the case study and research their ERP products. You may base your argument on following criteria:
    o Point(s) of difference (how is the product different from other vendors?) o Niche market (if any, and do they target a particular market?) o ERP services (what ERP services does the suite offer?) o What sized organisations are supported by this suite/solution?
    o Business Continuity (does the vendor offer any plan for business continuity during a crisis (for example, during the COVID-19 pandemic)?
    o Analytics (does the product provide Analytics features or services?) o And other dimensions/criteria that you could use in order to make your argument richer
  3. Recommendation: Recommend the product that is the most suitable for the company to address its challenges and requirements. Clearly explain how the selected product does this. You should draw on your analysis in step 2 to help justify and support your recommendation.
    In your report, you need to use quality references to argue that your choice of ERP is a suitable solution(s) for problems identified in the case study.
    Your arguments should make explicit links between the technological and organisational solutions of the ERP of your choice, and the short and long-term requirements of SCTA. For instance, issues like the efficiency of the business processes, business continuity, security, and running costs are important issues to be considered. At the end of your report, you should offer relevant recommendations to SCTA. You can also make assumptions wherever needed, for prices, after-sales support, etc.
    Case Study: Travelling in the time of the global pandemic
    The international tourism industry is taking a major hit as COVID-19 circulates into more countries – and fear about it – spreads across the world. Governments around the world have warned and continue warning would-be travelers to stay away from outbreak hotspots, and in some cases, enacting travel bans to forbid travelers from going to high-risk areas. Photos of empty tourist destinations around the world, emptied-out festivals, vacant churches and temples, and quarantined luxury hotels – show the impact of the coronavirus outbreak on the tourism industry has been devastating.
    A new report from consulting firm Tourism Economics has put some estimated numbers to this ravaging situation. The report suggests that for example, it expects the US economy to lose over 3.5 million visitors from Asian countries, translating to a 38% drop for 2020. The report also estimates that around the same number of tourists will not be visiting countries like Australia and New Zealand. The report tallied expected losses from the Asian visitors spending at $US35.7 billion – more than half of which are expected to occur this year.

    In such a tough and uncertain business climate, many companies who are involved in tourism are seeking reliable ways of accessing accurate information about their operation and the state of COVID-19 and its impact around the world. Many of them are exploring new ways to redesign their business processes and make them more efficient and cheaper. One of the Australian based companies that also has been affected by the spreads of the coronavirus is the Southern Cross Travel Agency (SCTA) company.

    Source: AP
    SCTA was established in 2002 and since then has enjoyed steady growth in Australia and the neighbouring countries. As a result, currently, the company has multiple offices across the Australasia region. Its corporate headquarters are in Melbourne but it has more than 10 offices across Australia and 5 in China, 2 in Vietnams, 2 in New Zealand, 2 in Indonesia, 2 in Thailand, 2 in Malaysia and 1 in Nepal. It employs 400 employees and annual sales of $240 million. The company’s administrative structure consists of departments for Sales and Marketing, Human Resource Management, Operations, IT, Research and Development,
    Accounting and Finance, and Public Relations. SCTA offers first-class and affordable holiday
    5
    experiences, mostly to international students and their families. SCTA initially had a manual booking system in each office, but changes and advances in technology have enabled SCTA to transform its business by using an online booking and communication system in 2010. However, the current system can only perform basic functionalities of maintaining current listings of the resorts (uploaded as a PDF file) and student enquiries. Further, during the upgrade the company experienced project delayed and budget overturn. This experience made the company’s board of director hesitate to implement new system.
    However, the general manager of SCTA is aware that the company needs to have a better comprehension of the current business environment and it is clear that the existing system does not provide them with necessary functionalities that enable them to capture and analyse different types of information from their geographically distributed offices. At the moment, different departments in order to satisfy their own needs, tried to develop their own systems or databases to facilitate their work- this is known as “feral or shadow systems”. A lack of trust in the ERP, ineffective training methods and complexity in extracting the data from the ERP were identified as a problem which lead to the development of “Feral Systems” (Kerr, 2007). This causes reductions in the effectiveness and accuracy of business analytics such as data mining and forecasting.
    Furthermore, SCTA not only needs to enhance their current system to promote their business but also needs to inform their clients and partners (resorts, airlines, hotels, Airbnb) about the latest developments concerned with the spread of COVID-19. In a recent board meeting, it was discussed that different types of information should be gathered, analysed, and shared with clients and partners to enhance the travel safety and experience of their clients before, during and after the trip.
    In addition, at this stage, SCTA‘s main clients are international students. However, with the emergence of new challenges, SCTA has to diversify its clients and offer new services. This change demands the provision of further information to different groups of new stakeholders. The current system does not provide expandable functionalities for making timely and multi-way communications with new clients and partners during and after trips.
    SCTA also wants its partners to be able to update all their information online.
    (End of the case study)
    Some guidelines
    The report is to be written to reflect your understanding of enterprise systems. It is up to you as to what aspects, issues or arguments you put forward, but they must be relevant to the enterprise systems field, and they must be grounded in current literature. Understanding alternating current and all the factors that affect it can be difficult

Write thread : Electric Circuit

Understanding alternating current and all the factors that affect it can be difficult. Find and share one video or article that helped you understand any of these concepts better. Write a summary of the video and why you believe your peer’s should read or watch this video.

DISCUSSION ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, you are required to create a thread in response to the provided prompt for each discussion. Each thread must be at least 200 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge.

Here is class note:

Up until this point, we’ve really been talking about DC current flow or direct current flow. Similar to this battery on this aircraft that we have a positive and a negative. When we have a completed circuit, we’re going to have direct her and just straight current flow in one direction. Really, as electrical systems began to develop, it became evident that there’s some real disadvantages to DC current flow. One of those disadvantages was that we need to have the same current flow, the same voltage produced for the source that we’re using. So for example, if I had a 120 volt lamp, I need to produce a 120 volts in order to power that lamp. But if I have a 240 volt lamp, I need 240 volts to power that as well. So if I’m producing 240 volts, but I want to run a 120 volt lamp. I’d have to use a resistor or some other way to bleed off that access voltage in order to have the exact amount of voltage to power that lamp. Obviously this cause a lot of wasted energy, so it wasn’t very efficient in that way. One of the other disadvantages was that DC current doesn’t do well if we transmit over long distances. The longer the distance we want to carry that DC current, the more resistance it’s going to incur over that distance. So again, we have a lot of loss and waste of energy. So alternating current, AC current actually came in and solved a lot of those problems. Alternating current operates in both directions. It, it will go one direction, one polarity, and then reverse itself and the other polarity. The advantage of this and what began to happen as we began developing electronics was that we can step up or step down AC current at the source as needed. This is done through transformers, and we’ll be learning a lot about transformers this week as well. A transformer uses electromagnetic induction to, to step up or step down the voltage at the source as it’s needed. So this way we can produce a same amount of current flow, same amount of voltage in either step it up or step down at the source when we need it to get the exact same amount of current flow. The other advantage that we have is that AC current can be easily manipulated the frequency. And we’ll talk about when we get into radio theory and radar, about how a lot of that works. But it’s important as we began to really understand the differences between AC and DC current, how they work, and what applications we want to use them on so that we can become better maintainers. And whatever area that we find ourselves in

Article 2

Leadership is found in the realm of life where people create meaning with one another and work together to achieve common social and institutional objectives to meet their wants and realize their ideals. Patient-centered leadership includes skills that affect patients and their families. Leadership skills aimed towards nurses, other healthcare professionals, the organization, or the broader healthcare system were included in organization and system-focused leadership. We may accomplish much of the necessary intellectual repositioning by shifting the conceptual register from management to leadership. Making the shift, however, is difficult and requires the application of knowledge from a variety of sources and disciplines. Knowledge of leadership may be put to good use in practice, particularly if it’s backed up by a good set of methodical procedures, such as those found in a good strategy process. (Parvin, 2019).

Leadership development may be investigated on a team or organizational level. Organizational, community, and tourist development, as well as collaborative leadership, are the subjects of interpretative and critical studies. Each one requires a unique set of abilities, but there are some similarities. Theoretical assumptions may be more or less appropriate. It is impossible to make a management choice or perform a managerial action without being affected by assumptions, no matter how good or bad they are. The conversation that follows will concentrate on advanced nurse leadership and will be guided by these four leadership domains. As a professor, I’m faced with the following conundrum: I believe leadership theory is important, but I also know that many students in my courses are skeptical of it. (Willi, 2017).

Much has been said about leadership and its importance in many aspects of life. According to studies, the ideal time to expose youngsters to leadership experiences is around their middle childhood. While religious figures were the most popular role in the qualitative phase, parenting as a leadership role was the most popular in the quantitative phase. Sectarian schools were found to offer reliable data on the ideological leadership viewpoints and important characteristics of Christian youngsters living in the region’s sociopolitical and cultural environment. While the GLOBE research offered valuable insights into the effect of culture on leadership, House points out that one of the study’s main achievements was to demonstrate that leadership qualities such as honesty and intellect are valued throughout cultures. These clergy leaders have been called to serve in congregations throughout the Episcopal Diocese of New York over the last three years with an understanding of the congregation as a system subject to dynamics and forces that affect its capacity to engage and work within the ever-shifting context in which the clergy are called to minister. (Parvin, 2019).

References:
You are required to explicitly use at least 8 different academic/scholarly sources in your essay.
These must include:
• At least 3 scholarly readings drawn from the LST1UNC reading list. These can be listed as either required or further reading, may be from any part of the subject and can include books, journal articles and published reports generated by reputable bodies (including those published on the internet).
• At least 2 reports from Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC) and/or Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) or reports generated by reputable bodies. You should locate these sources yourself, not use any of the ones available from the LST1UNC reading list.
• At least 3 additional scholarly materials that you have found yourself.
Please note that newspaper reports and other media items can be used but will not be counted towards meeting the above requirements. In addition, you need to avoid using just any ‘open web sources’ (e.g. Wikipedia) or quoting from lecture slides.
*** Reference list is NOT counted toward the overall word count!!!
You need to use Harvard Referencing style. If you require help with referencing, try accessing La Trobe Library’s Referencing Tool: https://latrobe.libguides.com/referencing-tool. Please note that referencing is very important in your University work. Every time you refer to ideas you have learned through reading a book, a journal article, or a report, you need to refer to this source in your writing. You need to also be mindful of Academic Misconduct policy (for more information see: http://latrobe.libguides.com/academic-integrity/ethical_use).
Direct quotes must be acknowledged using quotation marks (‘like this’) and should be followed by an in-text reference that contains the author’s name, year of publication and page number where applicable.
A reference list should be included at the end of your essay. It will contain the full details of the sources you have referred to in your text. The items should be in alphabetical order according to the author’s surname and formatted appropriately.
Submission:
• Your essay must be submitted electronically as a word file via the ‘Part B: Research Essay’ submission link in the Assessment block on the LST1UNC LMS site. No hardcopy submission is required.
• You will only be allowed to submit your essay once.
• Your essay will be subject to Turnitin which is a web-based text-matching software system, which can be used to assist in the detection of plagiarism.
• You do not need to submit a confirmation of submission or originality report.
• Please do not send late submissions via email to subject coordinator or tutor, you need to submit your essay via the appropriate process.
• Please note that your essay will not be marked until it is submitted electronically
Preparation, Presentation and Referencing:
• Your essay should be prepared and submitted using either:
o MS Word (.doc and .docx)
o You are not allowed to submit a pdf document
• Use A4 size pages and a clear, simple and legible black font – either 11 or 12 point.
• Double-space the text.
• Do not use margins smaller than 2.54cm.
• You need to use Harvard Referencing style.
• You need a title page (first page), which should include:
o your name, o student number, o tutorial group (day, time), o your tutor’s name,
o essay topic (be specific – for example: Topic 1, Option b), and o word count (not including reference list).
Essay Structure:
Suggested essay structure (according to the marks allocated to each section)
– Introduction and conclusion (5% of the overall mark): approximately 100 words each
– Crime issue (10-15% of the overall mark): approximately 300-350 words
– Theory description (20-25% of the overall mark): approximately 300-400words
– Theory application (25-30% of the overall mark): approximately 500-600 words
Please note that these dot points are suggestions and they do not indicate the number of paragraphs you need to have in your essay.
Content (see the marking rubric) Start with three key steps:
– First, you need to select one of the three suggested topics in Australian context. You will then search for the appropriate sources (authoritative sources) which will help you describe and frame the selected topic. The more information you have, the easier it will be to apply the theory.
– Second, you need to select one of the theories specified in your chosen topic (these are covered in Weeks 3, 4 and 5), which you will need to properly explain before applying it. Here you need to focus on theoretical concepts – provide a proper explanation of these in order to demonstrate your understanding. Do not write about the theorists, write about the ideas.
– Third, you need to now link the theory and topic. The links need to be properly supported with empirical evidence, which means here you need to use research in order to demonstrate how theory helps you understand the topic you selected.
This will help you construct your main argument(s) which you need to point out at the very start of your essay. In addition, you need to continuously relate the information you present back to this argument throughout the rest of your essay. In this instance your argument needs to be grounded in the application of the theory – how does your selected theory help you understand selected topic.
This is a persuasive essay, which means that you need to properly persuade the reader of your argument. In this instance you need to first persuade the reader about your knowledge on the selected topic; second, you need to persuade the reader of your theoretical understanding by properly explaining selected theory; finally through your application you need to persuade the reader of your argument.
For selected topic, you need to make sure you follow the tips:
– Briefly outline and explain key concepts relevant to the selected topic;
– Properly frame the topic in Australian context – here you need to provide statistical information on the extent, impact, etc.
Before applying the theory, you need to first explain the theory. Here you need to use academic and authoritative sources to define key theoretical concepts and demonstrate the understanding of theory. It does not matter which theoretical perspective you choose to apply. What does matter is how well you argue your case. Do not simply describe your selected theoretical position. You need to make arguments (maybe come up with three or four main points) that support your discussion and back these up with appropriate research (empirical) evidence. You need to keep in mind that when using empirical evidence to support your claims you need (i) a brief study description (e.g. number of participants, measures used), (ii) the key study findings (relevant to your argument) and (iii) the link back to the essay argument.
Throughout your essay you need to use at least 8 authoritative sources. This means you have to research widely, and you can begin your search with the set readings provided. These were selected because they are directly relevant to the subject content, so do not neglect them.
Structure (see the marking rubric)
Often the difference between a good and a poor essay is not what is said, but how well it is said. Essay structure is an important part of the essay. The following are some simple tips and rules that can greatly improve your essay.
Introduction
A good introduction is crucial. To navigate through an unfamiliar essay, the reader needs a map or instructions that highlight the points of interest and guides them safely to the end.
Your introduction is a brief summary of your essay. It must do the following:
– Set out the problem to be addressed;
– Highlight the main arguments to be made;
– Provide an explicit plan of the essay (the order in which you will present information); – Provide a direct answer to the question (or instructions).
Discussion
You must give serious thought to the order in which you present your information. There needs to be logic to it – you cannot just present information in a random order. A discussion needs to be well structured and the structure should be obvious to the reader. Keep telling your reader what you are up to.
Make sure you set out a clear plan in your introduction and then follow that structure in your discussion. Use ‘signposts’ to emphasis that you are following the plan (e.g. The second argument is…). Do not write too short or too long paragraphs (longer than two sentences, no longer than half a page). Each paragraph should have a topic sentence and should only discuss one idea – make sure your paragraphs are not too long.
Avoid over-use of quotes; remember, every time you present a quote, you need to explain what it means. You should only use 2 quotes per whole essay. You should also avoid asking rhetoric questions. You just need to paraphrase these questions into sentences.
Conclusion
Your conclusion is a brief summary of the essay. Do not introduce any new information, and certainly do not leave your answer to the question (or instructions) until the conclusion. You need to avoid the use of quotes here.
*** Please note that in academic essay you should not use subheadings.
Writing: The way the information is presented is one of the most significant aspects. In your assessment you need to keep in mind to write clearly, identify and justify your choices. There are a few easy steps you should follow in your writing:
• You essay needs to be grammatically sound, so make sure to check the spelling and punctuation before submitting.
• To avoid grammatical mistakes, avoid the use of overcomplicated sentences (sentences that are more than a couple of lines in length).
• Do not write your essay in first person. Make sure you adapt a more formal language (third person) for the purpose of this essay. This includes avoiding the use of abbreviations.
• As this is an academic essay, avoid the use of dot points or lists. Instead incorporate these points into sentences.
• You need to use a proper essay style-structure throughout. This also means, do not include tables, figures, and appendices unless you are asked to. Instead incorporate the information from these into sentences.
• Avoid over-use of quotes – remember, every time you present a lengthy quote, you need to explain what it means. You should only use 2-3 lengthy quotes per whole essay.
• You should also avoid asking rhetoric questions. You just need to paraphrase these questions into sentences.
• Avoid long (longer than approximately half a page) or short paragraphs (one or two sentences is not a paragraph).
• Avoid the use of subheadings.
Extensions:
If you are having difficulties with the assessment and/or have grounds to request an extension, submit your request online (Online Extension Form) to your tutor or subject coordinator at least 3 days before the due date. Do not email your tutor or subject coordinator, you will be asked to submit your request online – we do not grant extension request for this task via email.
Please note that unless there are exceptional circumstances, requests after this timeframe will be rejected. You should also keep in mind that unless you have LAP, you will be required to submit documentation with your request. Please also remember that unless there are exceptional circumstances (e.g. emergency), retrospective extensions are not approved, and you should consider applying for Special Consideration.
If you are struggling to achieve the set due date, please make sure you reach out to us ASAP! It is important to contact us before the due date.
Late submissions:
Please keep in mind that the penalty for lateness is severe. “The standard penalty for late submission of assessment tasks is 5% of the marks for that task for each delay in submission of a day or partial day up to a maximum of five (5) working days after the due date. Assessment tasks will not be accepted after the fifth (5th) working day after the due date.”
Marking Rubric:
This might be the most important document for you to refer to when you prepare for your assessment. This rubric provides you with a clear marking expectation and you should be guided by this rubric. Markers use this rubric to assess your work, so you need to ensure that you address the key aspect of this rubric. Only include information that is being evaluated.

Applied Maths and Physics for Games – Coursework 2 Specification and Mark Scheme
Motion Physics for typical Game Scenarios
Introduction
You are to build a small set of 3D physics demonstrations using the Unity Game Engine that can perform a variety of tasks in 3D using vector maths and equation of motion . This can be implemented in the language of your choice (Javascript or C#) though C# is preferred. Note that you are allowed to use the transform of all the game objects but not the rigid body or any of the Unity Physics. You must use the Euler method (described in the lectures) for all of the problems. You can use the structure Vector but not its methods such as normalized etc. Note that for high marks your solutions must be complete (meet all requirements), well coded, reusable, be a realistic, and take into account the dimension of the game objects in collisions. See the grade descriptors in this document.
Note that any mathematical symbols in bold are vector quantities.
Task 1:
Vector Maths – 25 Marks available
You shall build and test a class library consisting of at least the following functions. Note in Unity you can use Vector3 as your basic 3D vector structure. See Appendix A.
Function Max Mark3 %
3D vector addition 2
3D vector subtraction 2
3D dot product 2
Unit vector of a 3D vector 2
Vector reflection (axis aligned) 2
Polar to cartesian, Cartesian to Polar coordinates 3
Unit direction vector4 2
Magnitude of a 3D vector 2
Scaler multiple of 3D vector 2
Vectors nearly equal with radius 2
3D zero vector (0,0,0) 2
A point is on a line 2
Important Note: you should include at least one test for all these functions to get full marks in this section to demonstrate correctness in the functionality. Create a separate test script with hard coded test cases you can also use any built-in unit testing tools. Note you can use Debug.Log(…) to print your tests to the console.
Also note you may choose to create more methods such as vector projection in order to help you solve the problems.
Solve the following time- stepping problems using the Euler or similar method (see Appendix C) using your vector maths library:
Task 2 – 10 Marks available – 3D Trajectory problem with restitution
A) A trajectory in 3D (use a sphere) for a projectile that has a launch vector that can be set in design time. Time step = Time.deltaTime. The gravity vector is (0.0, -9.81,0.0). The initial position of the projectile can be anywhere in your scene. When the sphere lands (so y component of position very close to zero) then the sphere should bounce as though on a hard surface. See figure 1. Use a coefficient of restitution e that has a value that can be set at design time by using a public property on the script. Note that you need to decide when to stop the ball and this should be when the new bounce height (in y) is approaching zero. In other words, the vertical velocity after the bounce is smaller in than some tolerance (e.g. 0.01).
Figure 1 Ball in motion for 3D trajectory
Figure 2 Velocity setting
Figure 3 Showing entry for restitution (bounciness)
Task 3 – 15 Marks Available
This task is to create a scene that demonstrates a path follow routine using vector maths (direction vectors). Set up four or more game objects (waypoints) anywhere in a 3D scene. Another game object (a sphere) travels from waypoint to waypoint continuously at a speed that can be set via a public property in the Unity script. Once the sphere is within a given distance to the waypoint, it should then move in a circle around the waypoint and then on to the next waypoint (5 points for this step). The radius of the rotation can be set as a public property – see Figure 5 Waypoint script settings.
If your waypoints are labelled A B C D, then the order of travel shall be A B C D A and then repeat. The figure below shows an example scene with four cylinders as waypoints. Note that you must be able to move the waypoints to any location at design time and path follow with still work. Figure 6 shows the moving object’s public script properties.

Task 4: – 25 Marks Available
A) Vector reflection and friction problem. Construct a plane surround by four solid walls. This is similar to the pool or snooker table and can be square or rectangular. Figure 6 show a stylised plane and four cubes stretched out to form the surrounding walls (think snooker table cushions to get the dimensions correct). For part A you only need one ball (sphere).
Note that it is very important that the ‘table’ is aligned with the x-z plane exactly so that the boundaries and axis-aligned so that you can use simple axis-aligned vector reflection. Note that this is essentially a 2D problem and the y-component is not needed for the calculations (though is used to position the sphere on that table when designing).
For the first part of the problem, you need to demonstrate axis-aligned vector reflection from the boundaries. To do this set up a sphere on the plane that can be assigned an initial velocity (z and x components only actually change). When the sphere hits a boundary, it should ‘reflect’ of both the vertical and horizontal boundaries realistically (angle of incidence = angle of reflection). To slow the ball down you need to add dynamic friction to the table which is a decelerating force, and this is the acceleration part of the problem (as the mass of spheres in the problem all equal 1). The friction factor can be varied at design time (see Figure 6) and friction is always acting as a force (so deceleration) in the opposite direction of the sphere’s velocity vector. In other words, to create the deceleration vector you need to get the unit direction vector of the sphere velocity, reverse it, and then scale that by the friction factor.

B) Extension to Task 3. – Maximum of 25 marks for handling the first impact and the case of collisions between two moving balls (15 marks if only the first collision is handled) – see Appendix D for the formula for this.
You are to implement a two-ball collision at an arbitrary angle. Considering the scene in Figure 7 for the initial impact of the stationary red/target ball and cue ball, we have a white ball and red ball set up on the table. Using the code already created for part A, we can direct the white ball towards the red ball in the scene and because we control the initial velocity, we can hit the red ball at any angle. On collision the subsequent velocity vectors are dictated by the conservation of momentum a shown below. Note you can assume that the ball masses are equal so ??1 = ??2 and for the simple case that ???? = ??. You can also assume that all collisions are perfectly elastic. For full marks you need to handle the first impact (cue ball onto target ball) and secondary impacts of the balls even if both are moving, and in both cases you need to move both balls (update the positions) after any collision with side until the balls come to rest. Both balls should bounce realistically if they strike the boundaries after the impact.
2D conservation of momentum problem for an elastic collision at an angle.
???????? + ???????? = ???????? + ????????
Where ???? ???? and ???? ???? are the masses and initial velocities of the system and ????and ???? are the final velocities of the system. Again, the y-component for the velocities is always zero as we are only considering motion in the x-z plane.
Note as the masses are the same, we have the vector relationship of:
???? = ???? + ????
and by consideration of the conservation of kinetic energy (perfectly elastic collision) when the masses are equal and if ???? is zero we have:
????2 = ????2 + ????2
As can be seen in Appendix C the vector can be drawn as a right-angle triangle and so the vector ???? can be easily found once you know ???? at the point of impact.
See Appendix D for the full formula for collisions between moving balls and this can be used in all cases.
Note: You must comment code liberally to explain your steps.
The Coursework will be marked based on the following marking criteria
Marking Criteria Maximum component mark
Task 1: Vector maths library – to achieve high marks the library must be correct, well coded, and simple to use and be reusable. Marks are per correct function implemented (see main specification). Marks will be lost if the code is not testable so you must produce a test case. 25
Task 2 Part A: Trajectory in 3D for a projectile with restitution (sphere must bounce on landing) and the bounce must realistically correspond to change in the restitution value. This must be correct for high marks and meet all requirements. It must include the ability to change the velocity at design time. Code must be reusable e.g. for a different game object. 10
Task 3 Waypoint scene. Waypoints must be movable at design time and still be followed correctly. Motion must be continuous, and you must be able to the set the speed at design time as shown. Code must be reusable e.g., for a different number of waypoints. For maximum marks the motion around the waypoint must be implemented (there are 7 marks for this part). 15
Task 4: Part A: Vector reflection – for high marks you must take into account the dimensions of the spheres so that the bounces from the boundaries look realistic and all reflections must be correct. Dynamic friction must be applied to slow the balls down to an eventual stop. 25
Task 4 Extension: 2D conservation of momentum problem for an elastic collision at an angle. This must be mathematically correct and look realistic (balls move correctly after impact) for high marks and must meet all requirements. Secondary moving ball collisions need to be handled for maximum marks. 25

Appendix A – class files
This appendix contains starter code for the 3D Vector library. Note that the maths library shall use static class methods only and be called Vector3DMaths. Note Vector3 is a built-in structure so no need to create this.
//3D Vector Maths Library
public static class Vector3DMaths {
//all static class methods as pure utility
//this deals with 3D vector maths
/**

  • Vector addition
    */
    public static Vector3 addVectors(Vector3 v1, Vector3 v2) {
    Vector3 result = new Vector3(); //necessary maths here return result;
    }
    … the rest of the class
    }
    Appendix C – Simplified Billiard ball problem –ball B has an initial velocity of zero

Appendix D – Two moving ball collision formula
This is the equation for calculating the final velocity of a two-ball collision where both balls are moving. This also works for the case of one moving ball (e.g. cue ball) and a second stationary ball.
Apart from the masses everything here is a vector quality
X1 and X2 are position vectors of the ball centres at the point of impact.
The angle brackets signifies a dot product of the vectors (v1 – v2) and (X1 – X2) etc.
?? is the final velocity and ?? is the initial velocity.
Note that || X2 – X1|| etc. is the magnitude of the vector subtraction X2-X1
If the masses are equal, then the mass term at the beginning reduces to be equal to 1
Appendix E – Euler method for Equation of motion
Pseudo-code for Euler method for equations of motion
Set up variables and constants: gravity vector, acceleration vector, initial velocity vector, initial position vector, time interval deltaT etc. Use this for all of the problems and note that for the waypoint problem the acceleration a is zero.
Loop – in Unity use the Update() method .
{
?? = ?? + ?? * ???????????? ?? = ???????? + ?? * ????????????
//update the objects position
//check if you need to change the motion e.g. position of projectile is below zero so need to bounce etc.
}
Note – if noted in bold above then these are vectors quantities
