Men’s clothing
Studies have showed that all Cherokee male adults were breechclout which was made from deerskin. It was the first cloth to put on and the last to be removed. Breechclout was approximately 12 to 18 inches wide and about a yard or more long(Carr, 2017). This means that men held it with belt fastened around the waist. In the front and the back, breechclout was left to hand thus forming appearing like two aprons. Some breechclout was decorated at the end with either sinew embroidery or quill or with fringe which was formed by cutting the ends of the breechclout.
During travel, Cherokee men usually wore full-length buckskin legging which were attached to their belt. Sometimes the leggings were tied to garters below the knees and occasionally worn over the bare legs(Cochran, 2020). Over the shoulders, Cherokee men wore untailored mantles or robes especially during the winter. The robes were specifically made from either a patchworked piece of several smaller animal hide or a whole buffalo hide.
For ceremony, Cherokee men wore feather robes that were woven of bark fiber, decorated with either painting or embroidery. The robes were usually worn under the left arm and knotted on the right shoulder, but occasionally robes could be worn to cover both shoulders(Carr, 2017). During games and in war Cherokee men ordinary removed the breechclout and moccasins to avoid hinderance by unnecessary items. Further literature showed that a chief would be clothed in a gold-dyed buckskin shirt and leggings with a matching golden feather headdress during a ritual dance.
Women’s clothing Literature showed that just like a modern society, Cherokee would distinguish sexes using clothing. Although Cherokee women garment was similar to that of men’s breechclout, it was wrap-around skirt that stretched from their waist to their knees(Carr, 2017).
