Best and Worst Training Experiences

Assignment Instructions
Best and Worst Training Experiences

This assignment is worth 20% of your final grade.  It gives you an opportunity to reflect and apply concepts and theories from the textbook to your real-life experience in training programs.  The assignment addresses Course Objectives 1, 4, and 5.Most of us have participated in some type of training on our jobs, such as new employee orientation, lunch-and-learn workshops, Employee Assistance Program training, technical skill training, Employee Benefits update meetings, or management development workshops.  Think about the best and the worst job-related, formal classroom training experiences you have attended as an employee. YOUR ASSIGNMENTWrite a 4-5 page paper describing and analyzing two experiences – your best and your worst training experiences as an employee.  Use appropriate T & D terminology from the text book and other T & D sources; be specific about what made each experience good or bad.  Be sure to use two separate training experiences in which you were a trainee and – be sure to use training classes – not some other experience. If you have not attended a training class – you may interview another person about their experiences in training classes.  Be sure to explain this in the introduction to the paper and follow APA guidelines for citing Personal Communications. (See APA Publication Manual 6e – 6.20 p. 179.)Your brief description of the training session should include:
• Type of training
• Reasons for participating in the training
• Objectives of the training
• Target audience (for whom was the training designed?) and actual audience (who actually participated in the training?)
• Physical site of the training – were the seating arrangement and the type of training room conducive to the type of learning, etc.?
• Training methods used
• Personal/ interpersonal competencies of the trainer/facilitator.Your analysis should include:
• Which elements of the training design made the experience good or bad?
• Did the training objectives support the organization’s strategy?
• Which learning theory guided the training? (Provide examples from the training that illustrate the theory being applied.)
• Were you were able to transfer the learning?
• Recommendations for improving the worst training.Support your analysis with appropriate references from the textbook and at least three (3) other quality academic sources.  Use APA format for title page, in-text citations, references, any attachments or appendices, and quotations.  References should be listed on a separate page as required by APA style; however, the Title Page, charts, graphs, attachments, and References Page do not count in the page limits. This semester, The Graduate School is temporarily suspending its requirement for you to directly submit all of your written work to Turnitin.com.  In the past, the service has been available to assist you in editing your papers and understanding guidelines for proper citation and referencing practices.  Faculty will retain access to Turnitin and may opt to submit your written work to the service.  Until the service resumes, please stay alert to issues of academic Integrity in your work, including the best practices for supporting your work and avoiding plagiarism.  UMUC provides a number of resources and tools to help you understand and uphold academic integrity standards at: http://www.umuc.edu/library/libresources/turnitin.cfm#whatis
