Data Transmission through a Modem

            The term “MODEM” is a short term for MOdulator DEModulator (Arora, 2006, p. 254). Modem is a hardware device that is used for two-way network communication to convert between analog and digital data. Traditional modems were employed on the dial-up networks for conversion of data between the analog forms used in telephone lines to the digital forms employed in computers. The acoustic coupler is most common type of modem, which is used in libraries and information units in portable machines, while external and internal direct-connect are often common with permanent stations.

How Data is Communicated from Local Computer to Remote Network through a Modem             According to (Huang, 2014, p. 456) data communication between a local computer to a remote network through a modem can be categorized into three phases; connection establishment, data transmission and disconnection. In the first phase, the connection is established when the computer asserts the DTR (Data Terminal Ready) signal to indicate to the local computer that it is ready to make a call.
